Miles
The apothecary with its overpowering smells and its intriguing glass
jars was practically devoid of life when Miles stepped inside to follow
through on a request from his best friend. But there was one person left, the
very person he had come to see, standing behind the counter looking as
though she was taking a quick last-minute inventory before her shift ended
and she could shut up shop.
“Ready to go?” Miles asked her. The blonde she-wolf’s head
whipped up and her lips reared back to expose the beginnings of fangs as
they started to protrude from her gums.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” she snarled at him, looking
startled as though she had been so intent on her work that she hadn’t heard
him come in even though the bell above the door had rung just as loudly as
it always did. Oh, how Miles would have liked to rip that damn thing down.
But they had only been living in Silverdale for three months and things
were still fraught. He could imagine that even damaging a silly bell would
get him on the naughty list with the goody-two-shoes Silverdale
community.
“Is that any way to talk to your handsome escort?” Miles smirked
back at her, half-enjoying the disgruntled look that crossed her face. Amber
had always been good-looking, ever since they were children, and it had
been one of the reasons why she had always been a target in the eyes of
their old packmates. Yet she was even more beautiful now as an adult and
hot as hell when she was angry. Her brown eyes had a slight tint of blue
around the edges that seemed to spark with electricity whenever she
glowered at him.
“I don’t need an escort if the only one on offer is you,” she snarled
back at him before she turned her full attention onto whatever it was she
had been doing before. The fast scribbling sound of her pen on the paper in
front of her suggested that she was writing or even drawing something out
of stubbornness and frustration rather than it actually being anything of any
significance or importance.
“Hey, I’m not all that impressed with your brother’s orders either,
but he’s the closest thing we have to an alpha around here,” Miles pointed
out with a shrug of his broad shoulders. Amber looked up at him again then
and her gaze darkened.
“Don’t let Dash and the others hear you say anything like that,” she
pointed out, “They’ll have us skinned in three seconds flat.”
Again, Miles shrugged. “What they don’t know won’t hurt them.
Besides, they want us to prove our loyalty, but they’ve got to earn it just as
much as we have to give it.”
“They’ll be waiting a while,” Amber scoffed at him. “We both know
demon wolves only have one loyalty, and that’s to themselves.”
“Don’t let Daemon hear you say that, little sister,” Miles retorted,
and he watched the way her nostrils flared.
