Nero put a grape in his mouth and chewed, then sipped his Armagnac, a
Bas Armagnac de Gaube, from the appellation contrôlée Corderoy du Tiers.
“Really,” he said, doing a lot of vaguely unpleasant stuff with his mouth,
“really very good. Rare. Hard to get hold of. Extremely good.”
I watched him and waited with a smile that never made it past my nose.
When he had finally smacked his lips and reached for another grape, I
spoke.
“Sir, when somebody, even an actress, even a great actress and a Hollywood
star, reports a murder, that is an FBI matter. That’s not our jurisdiction.”
He froze halfway through a chew and arched an eyebrow at me. I cleared
my throat. “Obviously you know that. So I am guessing there must be some
good reason why you want me to travel to Los Angeles and talk to Melanie
Westwood.”
He finished his chew. “That would not be an unreasonable assumption,
Alex.” He sipped his Armagnac and leaned back in his chair while he
savored it. “First, we have no jurisdictional limits. Second, Miss Westwood
approached the Federal Bureau of Investigation a week ago, a few days
after hearing of the death of Frazer Benson. Mr. Benson was an
acquaintance of hers. They had many friends and acquaintances in
common. I believe,” he said, twitching his considerable nose over the rim of
his glass, “that the Hollywood star world is an incestuous and narcissistic
one. They wish to be seen and adored, and their friends are all simply status
symbols, as are their cars, houses, and clothes with particular labels. Their
world is made up, then, of those people and things with which they wish to
be associated.”
“Well, that pretty much disposes of them.”
He ignored me. “Frazer Benson was one of those people with whom one
wished to be associated. He had recently become a billionaire. He was both
a financier and an extremely expensive consultant on investments.”
“So what happened, he gave some bad advice and somebody got mad? Or
some husband didn’t appreciate Benson advising his wife in his bedroom?”
“Mr. Benson was at Jack Magnuson’s birthday party just over a week ago.
He was apparently a close friend of Mr. Magnuson’s. While there, Mr.
Benson apparently got into conversation with Melanie Westwood. She
claimed he was drunk and, in her words, ‘talked a lot of bullshit.’ Shortly
after that conversation, he left and went home, where he was murdered
some time shortly after four a.m.”
“You know the time because the security cameras on his gate recorded the
time of his arrival.”
“Correct.”
“Sir, not that I don’t enjoy your narrative style—in fact, I was just thinking
you really ought to be on the radio with that voice—but I have two
questions. First, what makes this a federal case? Why are the Feds involved
at all? And, more to the point, what makes it even remotely interesting for
us?”
