Cassian leaped halfway off the bed, chest heaving, drenched in sweat.
Again.
Again and again, he woke up like this. The nightmares had never
stopped. They were all different but followed the same theme.
Drake’s death.
It was inescapable.
He thought that moving away and changing his environment might
make a difference, but he should’ve known better. He hadn’t slept a straight
night in the year before he left Old Dome territory, he was only fooling
himself in thinking that he’d get a moment of reprieve six years later.
Cassian stretched out an arm to peak the curtains.
It was still dark outside.
He knew he wasn’t going to be able to go back to sleep anytime soon,
so he opted to do something productive instead.
Rolling out of bed, he padded over to his small drawer, picking up a roll
of tape. Grabbing his headphones off the top, he made his way through the
house and into the basement.
He lit a small candle on the mantle before putting his headphones on
and quickly taping up his knuckles.
The headphones didn’t even work, there was no electricity. Cassian just
liked the way that they blocked out some of the noise. Noise like the rain he
could hear pattering on the roof on the floor above.
He had to admit, the advanced hearing came in handy, but sometimes it
was too much. Sometimes he wanted a break from the racket.
Even though he’d lit a candle, he closed his eyes as he stood in front of
the punching bag. It was as close to sensory deprivation as he could get.
Pulling back his fist, he started with a few simple combos, just to warm
up. As he gradually picked up the intensity, he reminded himself not to go
too hard. After the way he’d just woken up, he wanted nothing more than to
tear the bag into two, but he only had one and he wasn’t eager to trek to the
market in the heart of Terra to get another.

Squelch, squelch…
Cassian tore the headphones off his head and dove into a roll toward the
mantle before blowing out the candle, all in less than five seconds.
Someone’s outside.
While that might not have been unusual for most people, Cassian never
had visitors. His small, secluded house, over a fortnight’s walk from Terra,
made sure of that. There was only one person in Terra who knew where he
lived, and she knew not to show up unexpectedly.
Cassian toed off his shoes and started toward the stairs, swift and silent.
He’d spent years customizing his home to his exact specifications, and
he knew it well. Even in the darkness, in the pitch-black room, he knew
where the twists and turns were, the creaky floorboards, even where there
was a slight incline or decline in the foundation.
Whoever was on their way had chosen the wrong house.
