Waverley
“Cheers! To a life full of love, happiness, and great sex,” my younger sister,
Wyla, says as she holds up her glass of champagne.
“Cheers!” We clink our glasses together. Throwing mine back, I feel the
bubbles go all the way down.
My oldest sister, Winry, just got engaged to her amazing boyfriend, so
we’re celebrating. Graham organized the whole proposal at his old friends’
bed and breakfast. Between the fairy tale theme of this place and all of the
twinkling lights and candles, the back patio looks like a scene out of a book.
“Winry, let’s see the ring again.” Mary, one of the owners of the place and
a friend of Winry’s, reaches out for her hand. “Ugh, it’s so beautiful.”
“I know! I feel like I’m dreaming.” Winry’s smile is plastered to her face,
and it hasn’t faded once. Not that I blame her. After everything she went
through with her ex, she deserves to be happy.
We fawn over the ring for a bit, and eventually, Graham pulls Winry
away for a dance. I stare at my sister and her new fiancé as they sway
together to the music.
A tinge of jealousy runs through me that I didn’t expect. I haven’t dated
in so long, although I haven’t really been looking to date. I was so focused
on getting my degree, then I jumped straight into teaching the sixth grade.
More couples file in alongside Winry and Graham. “Oh, look how
precious Owen is dancing with Annabelle.” Wyla points in their direction.
“Who knew the devil had a soft spot,” I say and swallow another sip of
my champagne as I watch Owen twirl his eleven-year-old niece around.
“Oh, come on, Waverley. He’s not that bad; you can’t be mad at him
forever.” Wyla rolls her eyes.
“I’m not mad at him anymore. I simply don’t like him.” Owen West is an
annoying, self-centered jerk. Yeah, he’s mouthwateringly handsome, and he
knows it too. He has no shortage of women at his disposal.
“Whatever, if you hate him so much, maybe you should stop staring.”
Wyla giggles.
“I wasn’t staring. I was watching Mom and Dad,” I deflect, but I was
totally staring.
“Sure, Wav. Want to dance with me?” My sister holds out her hand and
pulls me towards the dance floor.
“Alright, but I’m taking my glass with me.”
We dance for a while but then the night starts to wind down. Winry and
Graham excuse themselves—all too eager to celebrate their engagement in
private. I hang out for a bit and help clean up. Unfortunately, I’m not the
only one.
“Hey, Firecracker. Think you could pick up the pace? I want to get back
to Aster Creek tonight before sunrise,” Owen says as he ties off one of the
full trash bags.
“One, stop calling me that. Two, just go, I can handle this myself.” I push
past him and blow out the last of the candles.
