“No. I WILL NOT MARRY YOU.”
The curvy blonde stared down her nose at the man who knelt in front of
her and held a three-karat diamond ring.
The man’s mouth dropped open, and his cheeks flushed. His steel-gray
eyes narrowed.

A group of dancers who had crowded around him stopped wiggling
their jazz hands. The heart-shaped sparklers fizzled and died, leaving
behind the smell of sulfur.
“What do you mean, no?” His voice echoed through the cavernous
warehouse, bouncing off banners and props and filling the room with his
disbelief. A bead of sweat traced a serpentine path from his forehead to the
bridge of his nose. He wiped at it with the back of his hand, and the
overhead lights flashed across the face of a gold watch.
Claire Hartley hopped down from her director’s chair, stilettos striking
the concrete floor.

“Barney, you can do better than that.” She frowned and tilted her head
to one side.
Barney’s shoulders slumped, and he loosened his tie. A thick head of
brown hair was slicked back with pomade, which made him look more like
a middle-aged used car salesman than a twenty-seven-year-old hotel tycoon.
She lowered her voice and straightened the rose in his lapel. “This is the
biggest question you’ll ever ask in your entire life. You’ve already got all
the fanfare and excitement you wanted,” she said, waving a hand at the
flash mob. “Now you need to make it personal and tailored just for
Victoria.”

Claire turned around and shot a stern glance at the mob behind her.
“And guys, only half of you had your sparklers. What gives? I said this was
a full dress rehearsal.”
A slender brunette with pigtails frowned. “I thought we said jazz hands
only because the last time you used sparklers, the future groom almost set
his fiancée’s hair on fire?”

“Yes, and that is why the groom no longer holds a sparkler. But as long
as you guys keep your distance, we should all live to see at least thirty. Now
take five and practice that lift sequence, please.”
The dancers leapt to their feet and took turns dousing their still-smoking
sparklers in a bucket of water. They gossiped as they retreated to the back
wall, shaking out their limbs and stretching.

Claire tucked an unruly curl behind her ear and shifted her clipboard to
one hip. She reached for Barney’s hand and pulled him to his feet. Rose
petals clung to the knees of his khaki pants. He towered over her despite her
four-inch heels.

“I know it’s tough.” She touched his arm. “But don’t get discouraged. I
know you can do this. Tell me about how you first met Victoria.”
Barney took a breath, but Claire interrupted. “Chutney! I know you’re
new, but please do not wear a dress that short during the actual proposal.
You are a gorgeous dancer with the grace and poise of ten thousand
ballerinas, but no future bride wants to see another girl’s hoo-ha when her
boyfriend proposes.”
