“SO THIS IS YOUR two weeks’ notice?” The shock on my boss’s face is
the most movement I’ve seen on it in weeks. Maybe months. Her toofrequent Botox injections, paired with the yearly facelifts, have made it
harder and harder for her face to move, so it’s always surprising when her
face actually registers an emotion. The skin on her face is pulled as tight as
her personality.
Before I respond, I subtly check my watch. Five more minutes. “For the
third time, Clarice, I’m not quitting. I’m taking an extended leave of
absence. I’m stepping back and taking a break. Trying to find a life outside
the walls of this office.” In my profession, remaining calm under stressful
situations is essential. But this isn’t stressful. It’s ridiculous. Everything is
with Clarice.
She’s the kind of person who, with a to-do list of 100 things, would claim
that all 100 are a “top priority.” It’s exhausting, and today I don’t feel any

obligation to cater to her dramatics. So I throw some dramatics right back at
her.
“Clarice, I can understand why my decision might take you by surprise.
I’ve only sent weekly emails the last two months about this very thing.” Is
my voice laced with sarcasm as I speak? Yes. But I don’t care anymore.
“All of my emails explained that I would not be available during my leave
of absence and provided my expected departure date, progress on all my
cases, and information about whether they would be wrapping up or getting
reassigned to any of the other—very capable—attorneys in the firm.” It’s
the least professional I’ve ever sounded inside this office. And while it feels
completely foreign to me, I don’t change my tone when I go on. “But I
recognize that I probably should have given you more information. Or
maybe I should have had more than three conversations with you directly
going over the information in the emails.” I say all of this while never
breaking eye contact with her.
My words, not shockingly, don’t register with Clarice. I look at my watch
again, trying not to draw attention to the action. The phone call will be
coming in less than two minutes, which means I have less than two minutes
left in this office that has come to feel more like a cage. Just the thought of
leaving for a few months makes my shoulders think about relaxing for the
first time in what feels like years. I can’t wait until they actually relax.
I remain unruffled and professional as I stand in front of her overly large,
polished desk, with posture that makes me appear five foot eight instead of
my actual five foot five in a perfectly starched, white button-up shirt and
dark-gray pencil skirt that is neither too tight nor too loose. It’s all about
balance in this profession, especially as a woman. Balancing everything so
