Darkness will eat you alive, piece by piece, until there is nothing left except
emptiness and loneliness.
It’s eating away at me, chunk by chunk, ripping out the person I was.
The person I’m meant to be. It’s a daily struggle to resist its pull. Its power. I
don’t know how much longer I can hold it off, how much longer I’ll last
before it wraps its cold, icy fingers around me and I no longer feel or even
care.
That’s the scariest part.
But tonight the darkness serves its purpose for what I’m about to do. A
warm wind whispers across my face as I crouch in the shadows of the
Korean National Intelligence Service. The massive four-story building
looms before me, its walls pocked with small square windows that glint as
spotlights roam past. The building curves inward, centering on a glass-faced
entrance with a dome cupped over its top. The buzz of the city is muted
behind the stone walls that I just slipped over, and the soft grass beneath my
boots creates a deceptively calm atmosphere, masking the building’s true
purpose: intrigue and espionage.
I’m about to commit my first of a billion crimes. Not that it matters.
I’m dead to my friends and family anyway. From their perspectives, I died
with my best friend, Michelle, two weeks ago. The remains discovered in a
car wreck were claimed to be Michelle’s and mine. The god of darkness,
Kud, made sure his cronies scattered our DNA within the wreckage. It was
his terrible way of making sure I suffer as much as possible. A scream claws
at my throat as I remember how Michelle’s blood pooled at my feet after
Kud murdered her.
I shut my eyes and inhale deep breaths, shoving that scream far down
within my chest. There it must stay buried, or I will lose control. And that
must never happen. Instead I run my hands along my crossbow and recheck
the equipment attached to my belt: cable, clamps, leather pouch, and dagger.
I slip my mask over my face. Dressed in a black bodysuit with this mask,
I’m hoping my outfit will allow my form to blend with the shadows.
Tonight is my first step toward avenging Michelle’s death, and if
everything goes as planned, I will be on my way to implementing my own
insane scheme.
With these tortured thoughts, I take off in a sprint across the courtyard.
The surveillance camera will pick me up in . . .
One.
Two.
Three seconds.
The alarms blare. I jab my fists into my pouch and pull out two glass
vials filled with red vapor. I smash them to the ground on either side. The
vapors rise and contort over the grass. With a blast of crimson light, they
erupt into wild hounds spinning through the air, all claws and snarling and
drool.
Kud’s bloodhounds.
“Remember your orders,” I tell the hounds. “You are to keep the guards
at bay. Do not attack.”
