Belle
“If an alien comes in here, I’ll shoot myself in the head.”
Candice frowns, looking from me to the gun in her hand and then back
again. “That’s not really the point, Belle,” she says.
I laugh. “I know, I get it, Can. I didn’t think you’d given me the pistol
equivalent of a cyanide pill. What I meant was that the chances of a
Rhanian walking in here are close to what, like a zillion to one?”
Which is probably true. Sure, we might share Eliopan, but that doesn’t
mean we’re the kind of neighbors that are in each other’s pockets all the
time. Although if we were, my little bakery might sell a few more cookies.
“It’s not just for aliens,” Candice says with a toss of her blonde head.
“It’s for self-defense.”
I sigh and very, very carefully take the gun out of her hand. Candice is a
treasure, my best friend up here, my co-worker, and a general joy to be
around. She’s not, however, always the smartest or most cautious of people.
“Fine, I’ll put it under the counter, alright?” I squat down and slide the
gun to the very back of the shelf under the register and then, just for good
measure, I move a bunch of boxes in front of it. Hopefully, it’ll be out of
sight, out of mind and Candice will forget all about it. At which point I can
throw it into the nearest sink hole or lava swamp.
Yeah, Eliopan leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to natural features.
A brisk walk around the lava swamp is basically the planetary equivalent of
the Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore all rolled up into one.
“I heard that Kayden Wild was attacked by swamp monkeys again,”
Candice says, leaning back against the counter as I stand up again.
“Which isn’t exactly the same as being attacked by an alien race, is it?” I
point out. Which it’s not. Swamp monkeys are nowhere near as cute as they
sound. They’re about three feet tall, cunning, slimy, and covet human
clothes and accessories. There’s probably at least one in the dumpster out
back right this second.
“You can never be sure,” says my colleague.
I fold my arms. “Since when has a Rhanian done anything to you?”
Okay, they’re big. Huge even. Their bare chests are a xylophone of
muscles. They also have scaled legs and long tails, and fins of bone on their
skulls that make it look almost as though their heads have handles. But I’ve
only ever seen one from afar.
“Since never,” admits Candice. “But that doesn’t mean that they won’t
come over here one day.”
I laugh again. “And what? Grab themselves some human brides? Like
this is some romance novel or something?”
