This is the wedding of the year and I’m marooned in the parking lot.
I couldn’t be happier.
It’s been months of intense preparation. I’ve been working so hard that I
fell asleep in the bathroom last night. I woke up hugging the toilet.
This day must go perfectly. I’ve been desperately trying to get catering
contracts from Washington D.C.’s rich, fancy-party-throwing politicians
since I started Catering By Zoe eight years ago and today is my opportunity
to shine. It’s my opportunity to impress, to dazzle, to put my name on the
catering map.
Senator Whitfield’s son is getting married and I’m an official caterer for
the wedding. Appetizers, cocktail snacks, four-course meals—you name it,
I’m shoving it into the guests’ mouths.
My team isn’t as dedicated as I am, but I’m hoping they’re going to step
up in a big way today. Everything must be flawless.
“Aya!” I screech. “What are you doing?!”
She looks up at me as she plops an ice cream scooper into the duck liver
pâté like a toddler playing with a bucket of mud. “Preparing the appies,
what does it look like?”
A shiver racks up my spine as I watch her shlop the spoonful onto a
cracker, splattering the twenty-three dollar an ounce pâté all over the
recently polished silver tray.
My back tightens. “This is the—”
“Wedding of the year,” Aya and four other employees say at the same
time.
It almost sounds like they’re mocking me.
I suck in a tight breath and try not to frown as I look around our large
white tent at all of my team members who are trying not to snicker. “These
hors d’oeuvres aren’t supposed to be prepared until minutes before serving.
The wedding is in two hours! Aren’t you following the chart?”
My jaw clenches when I see the manilla envelope still sealed on the
table beside Aya. We both lunge for it, but I snatch it first.
“Seriously?!” I ask as I tear it open. “You didn’t even open it?”
She shrugs.
“You didn’t read any of it!” I say in disbelief as I rifle through the four
dozen crisp pages of pertinent information I spent a week preparing. “The
bathroom schedule, the uniform checklist, it’s all untouched!”
I whip my head around and frown when I see more manilla envelopes
disappearing.
“That’s it! Meeting. Right now. Gather around.”
I hear a cacophony of sighs and groans as I flip over a milk carton and
stand on it like a General about to address her troops. These people
wouldn’t last a day in the army. I, on the other hand, would thrive. I’d have
the crispest uniform in military history.
“How many of you have read the manual I provided?”
No hands. No freaking hands. I don’t believe this.
All of my thirteen workers stare at me with blank faces.
My gut tightens as I force out a breath. “We’re catering the wedding of
the—”
“We got it,” Aya interrupts with her hand in the air. “But we’re not
really catering the wedding of the year. Are we?”
I stare at her in shock.
