Ezra
She is the one. I know it without a doubt. I have been searching for a long
time for someone like her.
Someone good and pure. Young and healthy. Ambitious but not selfserving. Intelligent, but not pretentious. It’s a lot to ask of someone, but I am
optimistic this time.
So, I follow her. I slip into the hemlines of her life, skirting around the
silken edges of her periphery so that, by the time I make my grand offer, I
will be just barely familiar enough not to scare her away. After all, I’ve had a
long time to perfect the art of human existence, fooling them into believing I
am harmless.
I follow her to the library, where she meets her fellow Harvard classmates
for a study group every Tuesday afternoon.
“Pardon me,” I tell her as I pretend to stumble into her path in the dusty
upper stacks of the library.
“No, it’s my mistake!” she replies cheerfully, barely tossing me a glance
while her arms are piled high with leather-bound tomes. “I’m so clumsy

sometimes.” And then she’s hurrying off, packing away that little memory of
me into the back of her mind.
Later that week, I followed her to a warehouse west of the city, where she
sorts donations for a charity that serves low-income families. I open the door
for her as we enter together and she smiles in thanks.
“I like your sweater,” she tells me in passing, throwing a compliment at a
stranger in such a way that I’ve rarely seen humans do nowadays. “It suits
your eyes.”
“Thank you,” I reply automatically, caught off guard by the girl’s blatant
kindness.
Once again, she rushes toward something more critical and needy than a
random man in a dark blue sweater.
She does not stop to gawk at me. She does not offer me bright, greedy
looks like most women do when they see me. She doesn’t hesitate, stutter, or
pause to flirt when she zeroes in on the apparent wealth dripping from me. In
her eyes, I am not special enough to distract her. She is too busy being a
guardian angel to the less fortunate people of this city.
To her, I am nobody but a stranger to whom she offers polite remarks and
elegant smiles before moving on with her day. Because of that, she fascinates
me.
It has to be her.
Following her becomes an obsession. I drink in facts about her, and they
taste unbearably sweet. Her name is Lydia. Lydia Francesca DeSilva but she
goes by Lydia. She is barely twenty-one; she celebrated her birthday last
month during an unexpected March snowstorm. She has one of the highest
GPAs in Harvard University’s junior class. Her closest friend is a dark-haired
girl named Nina who studies art history, too.
