MARILYN
PRESENT DAY
When you imagine hell, you imagine that it’s probably going to be
hot. Unlike a vacation, you probably aren’t going to have a good
time. How do you have a good time when little men are running
around with pitchforks trying to skewer you like a witchy kabob?
Despite considering this place hell for the last six months, Blackwood
Academy doesn’t look anything like what I imagined. Would you believe that
the sun shines over Blackwood the same way it shines over Hawthorne or
Ridgeview? Imagine my surprise when we drove up to the gates and a
swirling cloud of doom didn’t suddenly appear above the academy.
“This is it?” I ask my parents as I unload my bags from the back. Four
oversize suitcases contain all of my worldly possessions, or at least the ones I
was allowed to bring with me.
“Where are the buildings with a thousand
years of grime and decay?” The academy looks like a God damn Ivy League
university with its large, sprawling campus full of ivory buildings. The most
nefarious thing in sight are the vines climbing up the sides of the building.
Real spooky shit, if you ask me. “Where’s the portal to hell?”
Mercer gives me a generous smile that says he can’t wait until I’m gone
and everything goes back to the way it should have been. He attended
Hawthorne Academy with my mother, Jacqueline, and both of them feel
uncomfortable with the idea that their daughter is attending a school for the
wicked. “You’re being very dramatic today, Marilyn. This academy is no
different than the others.” Says the man who was so upset that The Council
placed me here that he stormed out of the house and returned three days later
smelling like a distillery
“Come on,” I shoot him a teasing look. “You can’t honestly tell me that
Blackwood is what you wanted for me.” I’m poking a bear. An out-of-shape,
alcoholic bear, but a bear nonetheless.
Jacqueline climbs out of the car with a look on her face that says the
academy isn’t much to look at. Her nose crinkles in disgust and she has to
tear her eyes away from the buildings to keep from tearing up with grief.
Even though the lawn is perfectly manicured and the vibe of Blackwood
Academy isn’t far off from what she told me Hawthorne was like, it’s clear
that Jacqueline Snow thinks this place is beneath her. “Marilyn,” her tone is
condescending, “this place is nice. It’s very cute. I hope you enjoy yourself.
Mercer, we should get going. I have a benefit next weekend and I need to get
back to Earth.” God bless my mother. Or strike her dead. Both are good
options.
Neither of my parents ever wanted kids. When they had me, it was by
accident; subtle proof that their magic wasn’t completely infallible. Birth
control pills and spells only conjured up a baby, the exact opposite of their
intended purpose.
