Wyatt
“Anytime you learn, you gain.”-Bob Ross
“Wyatt! Where are ya, boy? Are you going to make me come in there and
find ya?”
“I’ll be right out, Granny! Don’t come in here, it’s slippery,” I say,
looking down at the piles of crap lining the stall like a second skin. Leaning
the shovel against the wall, I exit as she reaches the end of the row in the
horse barn. “Granny.”

She places her hands on her frail hips, the ones she likes to remind us
are still originals. “Did you forget about me?”
I stare blankly, pulling off my gloves. “Uh, no?”
“You were gonna take me to the feed store, so I could pick up more
grain for the horses,” she explains. “We need a few extra salt licks for the
cows, too.”
She’s pinning me with that hard stare of hers that’s as hot as a branding
iron on flesh.

“Granny, I told you over breakfast I’d go pick everything up.”
She crosses her arms and shakes her head. “I don’t remember agreeing
to that.”
She’s right; she didn’t agree. But she also didn’t outright say no, either,
which I considered an improvement from the ready-made answer she likes
to give me: I got it.

Granny has spent most of her life here at Trapp Farms in Big Timber,
Montana selling cuts of meat and alfalfa. Yet, despite having our farmhand
and token pretty boy, Ronny, she can’t keep up with all the work this place
requires. Between the cattle, horses, chickens, three barns, one house, four
cabins, and one-hundred and fifty acres, it’s too much even for someone
with two good hips.

“You don’t need to do it all on your own now that I’m here.” I toss my
gloves on a stack of hay and bracket my hips with my hands, giving off
vibes that I can do this work, even if I only half believe it. “I just need to
finish cleaning out this stall, and then I’ll go.”
She huffs. “I’m eighty-one-years young and have been doing this work
all my life.”

“And you’ve done a fine job, Granny.” There’s no way I’ll tell her
otherwise. “Since I’m sticking around at least for the rest of the summer,
you might as well use me and these…” I kiss my biceps, and she rolls her
eyes as I continue. “You’ve come with me every other time to pick up feed.
Why don’t I try it this time to see if I remember what to do?”
She squints up at me. “I guess I could call Esther to come have some pie
with me. Wouldn’t want it to go to waste.”
I nod in agreement, though there is zero percent chance her homemade
pie would ever go to waste. “I’m sure Esther would love that.”
Esther is Ronny’s mom and our closest neighbor.
