“Hey handsome, want to dance?”
My friend Brad nudged my shoulder and the tequila in
my glass spilled over the rim, threatening to stain the
sequined dress of the woman who was speaking to me. A hand flew to her
mouth as she gasped, appalled that I nearly ruined her outfit.
“Sorry, what?” I asked, blinking out of my daze.
Since I returned home from my deployment, I had a bad habit of slipping
back into my thoughts. I couldn’t help it, not even if a ditzy blonde woman
was begging me to escort her on the dance floor.
“I asked if you want to dance,” she purred.
Twirling her hair in between her fingers, she batted her eyelashes, and a
grin tugged at the corners of my lips. I leaned back onto the wall, relishing
the attention. It had been a long time since I had kissed a girl, but I’d seen her
jumping from guy to guy earlier, and I had standards to uphold.
“No thanks,” I said.
Crossing her arms over her chest, she pushed up her breasts and even
went as far as to give them a little shake. A tease—a temptation—one I was
strong enough to withstand. Sighing, I shook my empty glass in Brad’s face.
“I need a new drink.”
I walked around a cluster of girls in short dresses and headed for the bar,
but nearly plowed over a short brunette who hovered next to the speaker.
Sweat trickled down my spine, the thud, thud, thud, from the speakers
reminding me too much of the sounds I heard overseas.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered, grabbing the woman’s elbow before she landed
flat on her face.
“Oh, it’s alright,” she said, brushing her hair out of her face. Our eyes
locked and my heart fluttered in my chest. For a second, I thought I knew her
from somewhere, but her twisted expression made me think otherwise.
“Do I know you?”
“No.”
The bartender whistled to get her attention. “Hey miss, your drink is
ready,” he said.
Blushing, she grabbed the martini glass and waved her card over the
terminal. “Well, have a nice night,” she said, and just like that, disappeared
into the crowd.
I searched for her, but it was pointless; the club was too dark to make out
any faces from a distance.
“Sir? You need a drink?”
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I nodded, holding up two fingers.
“Tequila. Make it a double.”
He poured my drink quickly and I downed it all in one go. It burned my
throat, but I refrained from making a face. Turning the glass upside down, I
placed it back on the bar and slipped into the crowd. To my luck, Brad and
his friends were still talking to the blonde and her entourage.
“Hey, you!” I grabbed her by the waist and twirled her around. “What’s
your name?”
She giggled and placed her open hand on my chest. I hoped she couldn’t
feel my racing heart.
“Maia,” she teased.
“Maia,” I repeated, letting my hand slip down her shoulder blade until it
