“You guys have absolutely no idea.” Benedict Dule glared at his computer
screen as if he could change what he was seeing. “If you go telling people
there’re vampires waiting for a snack in McLaren Park, then every second
student with a pulse is going to be dressing in skimpy goth clothes and
parading themselves up and down the pathways waiting to be pounced on.
The other half are going to be patrolling the same area with placards about
how vampires are evil when they’re not even supposed to exist according to
the human world. And werewolves in Golden Gate Park? Really? People,
werewolves aren’t real. They’re called shifters…”
He stopped mid rant as he heard the discreet ding of his doorbell. “I’m not
open for another twenty minutes,” he said, not even bothering to look up.
“The coffee shop next door serves a great brew if you want to go there and
come back when I’m open.”
“Er… I’m not even sure how I got the door open. I don’t think I can do that
again. And aren’t you meant to help people like me?”
What the heck? Benedict looked up. The woman standing by the counter
was young, probably early twenties. She had long dark hair, tanned skin,
and big brown eyes. Then other details registered. Specifically, the smudge
of what looked like grease across her forehead, a huge red splotch across
her yellow summer dress… and she was translucent.
“Oh, dear.” Benedict shook his head, genuinely sorry for his new noncustomer. “My condolences. Are you newly dead? Car accident? Assault?
You do know I can’t change your current situation, don’t you?”
“I was drawn here.” The girl looked around. “Nice bookshop. I love how
you’ve got the romances front and center, and wow, you have a paranormal
and psychic section, too. Very on trend. You should advertise over at the
university – students would love this place.”
Possibly a marketing major? “Thanks for the advice.” Benedict smiled. It
was the least he could do. “Did you need help passing through, crossing
over, you know, going where dead people go?”
“Where do they go?” The girl whirled around to look at him. She was
already getting a bit wispy around the edges. “Where do the dead go? You
must have the inside scoop, right? You have that death vibe in your aura,
and you’re the only one who’s seen me so far. I almost walked right through
one person, and she didn’t even blink.”
“I’m still living, so, no, no inside scoop.” Benedict chuckled. “But it’s all
good. Anyone I’ve spoken to from the other side all seemed happy enough.
So…” he wiggled his fingers in the walking motion. “Time to go?”
The woman folded her arms across her chest. “You’re not very good at this,
are you? I thought people who talked to the dead were all, what’s your
name, and who killed you, and did you see your killer?”
Glancing outside where the street was slowly getting busier as businesses
opened, like his one should be, Benedict looked back at the young woman.
