I CLIMB into my truck and slam my coffee into the cup holder. I’m already
ready for this day to be over. I woke up late, raced through a shower that
was at first way too cold, and then got way too hot. By the time I had the
temperature just right, I was done with my shower and hurrying to get
dressed and go.
I start the truck and hit the gas, peeling out of my driveway and down
the nearly deserted backroads towards town. I finished up my part of the
house we’re building yesterday so I’m headed into the office to get caught
up on paperwork. That’s another reason why I’m ready for today to be over.
I hate doing paperwork. I’d much rather be on a construction site, working
with my hands and staying busy. That’s the downside to being the boss,
though.
I started Clearwater Construction right after I graduated from high
school. I spent my Junior and Senior years dual enrolled in high school and
local trade school. I knew that I wanted to get out of my parents’ house and
be on my own as soon as possible, and I worked hard to do just that.
I started my construction crew when I was nineteen and I’ve grown it
over the last eight years to where I actually have a crew and more than just
some friends helping me when they have the time.
My specialty is welding, which I do most of the time, though I can help
out anywhere when needed. With one of my guys leaving, I need to hire
someone to replace him, and fast. I’ve had a few job postings and ads out
for the last week, but then I got busy with welding so today I’ll be going
through any applications I received.
I pull up in front of the Clearwater Construction offices and park. The
town of Clearwater is just starting to wake up, and I give a few tight nods to
people as I climb out of my truck and head inside. I’m not one to make a lot
of small talk, and I know that some people in town probably think I’m a
jerk or just a grumpy loner. They wouldn’t be wrong.
My phone rings as I take a seat behind my desk, and I sigh as I answer.
“Yeah?”
“Still haven’t replaced your secretary, huh?” My oldest friend asks with
a laugh, and I groan.
“Shit, no. I forgot about that. I’ve been busy and focusing on replacing
Jonas first,” I tell Fisher.
“Well, you might want to get on that next. Your greeting would
probably scare off any potential new clients,” he advises me.
“I’ll add it to my to-do list,” I grumble, and he laughs again. “I don’t
need to worry about the new clients. We almost have more work than we
can handle now.”
“Damn, man. I was calling to see if you had time in your schedule in the
next few months.”
