18 months later
Hackney, London
UNITED KINGDOM
The mixture of too many noises echoing off three-hundred-year-old wood
vanishes the instant I step out onto the street after Jesse. With hands in my
pockets, I move to the curb and rock back and forth, heel to toe. It’s an
unseasonably warm night for October in London, but it doesn’t make
having to wait any easier.

“Is Romeo coming?” I turn to Jesse, who’s still holding the door with a
small group of our acquaintances surrounding him.
“Give the guy a break. He might not see her again.” Our eyes meet and
the seriousness on his face breaks before the sentence is even through.
“You’re going to make a fucking appalling barrister,” I sigh, ambling
back towards him. This night has become far too tedious already.

A few beers, that’s all it was meant to be, but as usual, Romeo takes it a
step too far with his drinking. Then, like a thorn in my side, an
overwhelmingly average girl with a decent ass makes googly eyes at him
and he loses his goddamn mind. It’s like beer goggles with a vengeance. In
his alcohol-soaked state, they’re all damsels in need of saving, like he’s a
knight, and his weapon of choice to fight the dragon is his cock.

I tug the door from Jesse’s hand and shoo him away. Peering back inside
the pub, I eye my target, and with a perfectly timed insidious smile, I let the
door swing back and hit Romeo’s bathroom date square in the shoulder. His
arm unravels from her waist as he stumbles crookedly into Jesse’s chest.
“Terribly sorry, sweetheart,” I dismiss, turning from her and walking to the
zebra crossing in front of the pub.

Cackling, Jesse supports Romeo and trails behind.
“Please don’t tell me you invited her to Patel’s,” I scoff, noting that the
click-clack of her heels are the only footsteps other than our own that aren’t
fading. The woman is worse than the dirt on the bottom of my shoe, and the
fact she believes herself worthy enough to be in my presence makes my
blood boil.

“It’s a takeaway, for Christ’s sake. No one needs an invitation,” he slurs.
“She’s not coming home with us, so you have as long as it takes Patel to
dish up the curry to get her out of your system.”
“Mulan’s not happy,” Jesse snorts.
“I’m Japanese, you inbred upper-class mother fucker.”
“Snow White then,” Romeo contributes.

“Yeah, she’s German. That’s where the raging asshole half of you comes
from.” Jesse runs the back of his hand down my cheek. “And you’re just as
beautiful with your fair skin and black hair.”

“Piss off, troll.” I swat his hand away before pulling aside the hanging
plastic strips that cover the entrance to Patel’s Indian takeaway.

“They’re Nordic. I’m English, remember? Inbred and all.” Jesse taps my
cheek as he sneaks in the door before me.
I groan at the back of his head, “It’s not my fault your country has fuck
all good villains.”
