Sunday—August 28
I pulled to a stop in front of the wrought-iron gates. Athena Quinn hadn’t
mentioned a gate in the email. I looked over at the security booth. A man in a
tan security uniform sat there playing on his phone. I had a feeling that he
knew I had pulled up but had chosen to completely ignore me.

There was no way I was going to let myself be late for my first day
because of a negligent security guard and an unexpected gate. I rolled down
the window of my beat-up Honda, and the salty air hit me. Everything around
me was lush and green. It was strange that I could smell the ocean from so far
away. Or maybe the beach wasn’t that far away at all. Who knew what was
behind this gate?
I waved my hand to get the security guard’s attention.

He ignored me.
I lightly tapped on my horn.
The man finally looked up. He opened the little sliding glass window
and stuck his head out. “Turn around and take the first two lefts and you’ll
find your way back to Route 278.” He went to close the window like that was
the end of the discussion.
“Wait! I’m not lost.” I hope.
He just stared at me.
“I’m here to see Athena Quinn.”
He continued to stare at me.
“Athena Quinn. The romance novelist.”
“Oh, I heard you.” He shook his head and grabbed a clipboard. “Do you
have an appointment?”
“Yes. Well, no, not exactly. But I’m her new assistant. I’m moving in
today. She’s definitely expecting me.”
“What’s your name?”

“Hazel Fox.”
He checked off something on his clipboard. “Well, Miss Fox, you’re in
for quite the surprise if you think you’re going to see her.”
I frowned. What did that mean? Before I could ask him, the window
slammed shut, and the gate in front of me swept open. For a second I sat
there and stared. Trees lined a long gravel road. The Spanish moss draping
from the trees blew in the breeze. It was like I was entering some beautiful
old southern plantation.

My tires spit back gravel as I slowly made my way down the long drive.
If I looked hard enough, I could spot mansions nestled among the lush
greenery. Mansion after mansion after mansion. Before accepting the
position, I’d read about the little island off the coast of South Carolina. All of
its restaurants and shops were required to blend into the scenery. The
mansions had taken on the same aesthetic. Tans, grays, and browns. Each one
was more magnificent than the last. They somehow blended into the trees
while still standing out.
