I IUNVOLUNTEER
MUSIC PULSED FROM A MULTITUDE OF SPEAKERS HIDDEN AROUND THE
amphitheater. It slipped through my body, pulling excitement to the surface
and teasing all my tingly girly parts.
It had the same effect on my sisters. Eyes bright, Mae looked at me over
her shoulder as she skipped down the front row. “This is such a great idea.

I’m surprised you thought of it.”
“Thanks,” I said in a flat voice.
Her eyes rounded, and her glossed lips formed a horrified O. “I didn’t
mean it like that, Laney!”
Y’sindra snorted. “I mean it. This isn’t exactly your style. The only half
naked man you ogle is your boy toy.”

I shot a glare at Y’sindra bouncing along behind me. Diminutive my
sister might be, but her opinions were not. “First, you could show a little
respect and stop referring to Teddy as a boy toy.” Though he totally was. I
climbed that prime piece of man meat like a jungle gym on the regular.
“Second, I can appreciate a good-looking male—or female.” I winked at
Mae. “This is a mixed revue, ya know?”

Blue eyes shining like polished sapphires, she turned in a circle, taking
in the large space. “Where are the girls? I thought you invited them?”
“I did. Zee messaged this morning to say she, Eli, and Pru are driving
here together.” I dropped onto my seat, sinking into the plump memory
form cushion. I didn’t do well with crowds, and the closer we got to the big
night out I’d purchased tickets for on a crazy whim, the more I had come to
regret my decision. “Tickets are at will call. There’s still plenty of time
before the show.”
“All together?” Mae stopped turning long enough to ask. “Dangerous.
Who’s driving?”

She wasn’t wrong about the danger. Elisette was a sun fae who’d
recently run away—I’d call it escaped—from Eodrom. The snooty seat of
sun fae power in Ta’Vale. Pru still lived in Ta’Vale, and I doubted she’d
ever even been in a car. Zee was just a terrible driver.
“Jason is dropping all three of them off here. They’ll take resort cars
back.” Eli’s fiancé was a gem. He’d get them here and home safely. In Pru’s
case, she’d use one of our father’s portals to get home. I bounced in my
seat. The thing was cushy and comfortable. It had to be expensive.

“Probably a good idea,” Mae said. “I’m glad Eli stayed. She’s been a
big help to me in the garden, and Jason is a gem.”
“I’m blown away you invited the blood fae.” Y’sindra climbed onto the
chair and stood on her cushion to watch the doors at the rear of the large,
rapidly-filling space. “It was a good idea. She’s cool.”

I grunted. It hadn’t been my idea. After my attempt to infuriate Prunettia
with an obnoxious level of kindness went awry, Teddy low-key pressured
me into getting to know the female I’d accidentally befriended. She might
be a member of the Royal Fae Guard, he’d argued, but she was also the
only blood fae aside from my mother I’d ever met.
