Willow ~ Fifteen years old
“Mom, can you get the door?” I holler over my shoulder as I’m washing
dishes.
She grunts as she walks past me, tightening her bathrobe around her thin
frame. I glance at the clock on the wall; it’s a little early for her usual suitors
to be knocking. I know it’s not for me. I don’t have any friends and even if I
did, I would not bring them here. I’m doing my best to keep the house clean
and to fix the things I can, but the house has seen better days.
When I hear masculine voices coming from the living room, I grab a
dishtowel to dry my hands. Peeking around the doorway, I see my mom
sitting on the couch with a military officer crouched in front of her, another
standing quietly at his side.
I start to back away when my mother tells them they will have to talk to
me. She isn’t feeling well.
The uniformed man in front of her stands and helps her to her feet. My
mom walks past me, not even giving them a second glance.
Before I know what is happening, I’m the one on the couch and one of the
officers is sitting by me, his hands wrapped around mine. A casualty
assistance officer he calls himself. I catch the words accident, beneficiary,
remains …
His mouth is moving, but I’m only catching every other word because my
mind is trying to make sense of what is happening. There must be a mistake
because my brother knows how to survive anything. Then I catch the word
explosion.
Oh, how do you survive that?
“Do you have someone you can call to be with you and your mother?” he
asks.
I shake my head, struggling to clear the ringing in my ears. “I’m, um, no,
we’ll be okay,” I hear myself say.
He glances around the room, then gives the man with him a concerned
look.
Standing up, I walk over to the door, opening it for them. “Thank you for
letting us know.” My eyes drop to the ground.
Both of them step outside. “I’ll be back in a few days, after you’ve had
time to process. I have a few things I need to go over with you and your
mother. Would Thursday afternoon be a good time to stop by?”
I nod my head, forcing my eyes to meet his.
Slowly, I close the door, staring out the window as the two uniformed men
make their way down the broken sidewalk toward their vehicle. They look so
out of place here, all polished and prime. Most of the homes on our street
have been abandoned. There are some squatters a few houses down, but most
of the houses are no longer livable.
