“Papa Fox,” I grin brightly and pat my obviously irritated best friend’s
back. “I really appreciate you coming to support me in my time of
need.” Fuck, if the air doesn’t smell sweeter now that I’m no longer
facing a prison sentence. We reach his truck, and I just have to fuck with
him. Placing my hands on my hips, I tilt my head to one side as I look over
his truck. “You know, you really ought to look into a greener vehicle.” The
dark blonde brow on Fox’s face twitches slightly as he shoves my shoulder.
“I’m just saying, this is a gas guzzler, you should do better.”
“It’s diesel,” he mutters, sounding like the grumpy, bad-ass lumberjack
he is.
Gasping dramatically, I clutch my chest. “You heathen! Do you not care
for your mother earth? You’re in Southern California, you can’t drive a
diesel truck.”
“Listen fucker, you drive a fucking Tahoe, so shut the flapper.”
“It’s a hybrid.” I counter, and he scoffs.
“It’s still shit on gas. Anybody who has a problem with my truck can
say it to my face. And you shouldn’t be talking shit since you’re expecting a
fucking ride in my “heathen” truck.” Giving him a slow blink, I shrug
before touching my fingers to my lips and then pressing them to his
forehead and running away before he can hit me.
“Sure thing, Papa Fox!” I laugh while sliding into the truck. Today was
my sentencing for my assault charges. Thankfully—I guess—Andrew
didn’t die or end up with long-term injuries after the beat down I gave him
four months ago. With the help of our tattoo shop’s lawyer, Frank, I didn’t
serve any more jail time than when the cops picked me up at the bar after I
beat the ever-loving fuck out of Andrew. I do, however, have six hundred
and seventy-five hours of community service to atone for my sins.
It’s fucking bullshit if you ask me. He beat his girlfriend, and I am the
one being punished. Over the last four months, I’ve lost clients at the tattoo
shop I work at, missed conventions I was supposed to attend, and had to
move out of the apartment I rented with my friend and co-worker, Ash.
Well, I guess I didn’t have to. But Ash’s little sister needed a place to stay,
and I needed away from the questioning stares, so I left. The absolute worst
thing I’ve had to deal with isn’t the fines, court, or the stares, it’s that Ren
has refused to speak to me since that night. No texts, no calls, no visits.
Nothing. I’m at the point where I’m going to stand outside her window with
a boombox over my head to get her attention.
