Paris Wells looked at her watch for the third time in the last

anything happens.” She’d known then that whatever was in that
manila folder could get him deported, imprisoned, or worse,
but the danger as she understood it stemmed from the weight
of his words, not the possibility that his head would take up the
wrong square foot of space at the wrong instant.
