“Sorry, folks, this weather system means we’re going to be here for a while,”
the pilot announced over the speaker. “Hope you don’t mind an overnight in
Hawaii.”
The rest of the plane groaned.
In consternation, I looked up from the sketches on my iPad. I’d been
reviewing the sketches of the runway outfits Harmony had designed and sent
over. “What did he just say?”
The man across from me in business class winked at me. “He said we’re
spending a night in Hawaii.”
I pursed my lips. This couldn’t be happening. This didn’t happen to me.
Normally, I would be flying private. However, that plane had been
occupied, and so I was stuck on a commercial flight, coming back from a
modeling gig in Australia. I’d popped a Xanax on the way over and only
woken up a half hour ago. I was supposed to be back in New York City by
the morning to relieve the nanny and see the kids. Instead … this.
“Great,” I grumbled.
While we taxied into the terminal, I made arrangements with the nanny
for her to stay an extra night with the kids. My mother obviously couldn’t be
trusted to watch them. She shouldn’t have been trusted to watch me.
Then I slung my Birkin onto my arm and strode off the plane. The
thunderstorm that had grounded us raged as I stepped into the airport.
Arrangements would need to be made for the night. A car service, hotel,
dinner. I’d texted my travel agent on the way, but I hadn’t heard from her yet.
Usually, she was on top of things, but it would be the middle of the night
back home.
“God, I need a drink.”
My heels clicked against the tiled floor as I navigated the airport past
hundreds of other disgruntled travelers. An extra night in Hawaii would be a
dream … had it been planned. Instead, all of us were stuck in a torrential
downpour without hotel accommodations or any information about when
exactly we’d be able to get out of here.
I found the first-class airport lounge. Glass doors slid open to reveal a
crisp modern interior, a business center, and best of all … a fully stocked bar.
Already, several dozen businessmen in stark black suits were seated around
the room. Only a handful of other women were present, dressed in their own
dark suits, on calls or buried in their computers.
Men and women alike looked up as I strode into the room in my sleek red
dress and Louboutin heels. My dark hair was down in loose curls. Everpresent cherry-red lipstick perfectly applied on my lips. Despite the
circumstances, not a single strand was out of place.
“Can I help you?” the bartender asked when I took the only unoccupied
seat.
