“It’s wild out there!”
Patsy Cork was right. Not only was it lashing with rain, the winds were
at gale force. Standing in front of Lottie, she looked amazed she’d made it
in at all, the new recruit.
“Now you’re here,” she continued, “let’s get you started. There’s plenty
to learn.”
About-turning, the woman, who was taller than Lottie, around five foot
eight, her tight-fitting clothes bulging in several places, led her deeper into
the building. Silver Birches was the name of it. A care home for the elderly,
single storey, built in the sixties or seventies. Purpose-built, for the dying.
There was a smell in the air, one that only deepened Lottie’s grimace. It
reminded her of the canteen at school, stale and unappetising, reeking of
stew or boiled cabbage, those particular delights slopped onto plates in big,
messy ladlefuls for the students to then ignore. Her heart sank, all the way
into her Doc Martens.
She didn’t want this job. Had told her mum, Jenny,
who’d secured it for her, there wasn’t a cat’s chance in hell she’d spend her
days wiping drool from people’s mouths or worse. But Jenny had played
her trump card. ‘You will work there,’ she’d said, ‘because I need a
contribution towards rent now you’ve turned eighteen. If not…well, if not,
I’ll have to let your room to someone who isn’t so workshy. And don’t look
at me like that, like I don’t mean what I’m saying. I do.’
She didn’t. Lottie was certain. She’d chuck her out to go where? The
streets? Then again…there was something in the way Jenny had said it, her
expression nothing less than glacial, that had made Lottie refrain from
arguing further. She’d do a couple of months at the care home, she’d
decided. With some work experience under her belt, she’d stand a better
chance of getting a job in a shop or a bar or nightclub. Anywhere but there.
“So, this is the staff room, and this is your locker. Lottie? Lottie, are you
listening?”
“What? Oh, yeah, yeah. That’s my locker.”
“And here’s the key for it. Don’t lose it or you can pay for the
replacement.”
Taking the key, Lottie glanced around. The room was tiny, with five
lockers, a table, and two chairs shoved in the corner, plus a small countertop
with a kettle, some tubs of sugar, tea, and coffee on it. Piled in a tiny plastic
sink were several mugs stained with dark liquid. Not just grimacing, she
flinched, resolving to bring her own mug in and keep it separate. This
whole place…it seemed contaminated somehow. As if simply by being
here, you could catch old age. She bet the washing-up would be her task,
pure drudgery.
“Your hair,” Patsy began, and Lottie had to conceal a sigh. She’d
wondered whether it would be a problem. “Do you intend to keep it that
colour?”
It was blue. Mercury Blue. Why should she change it? Most of the
residents here were likely too blind to see it anyway. And if not, then it’d
add a splash of colour to their lives, because this place, with its scuffed
magnolia walls, cabbag
