PAYTON McCABE WHIRLED AROUND IN THE KITCHEN OF THE
Enchanted and quickly stirred the chowder just in time to keep it from
scorching. Her magic tingled, indicating the chowder was exactly right. Just
as she was turning the burner off, not one, but two timers went off.
She went to open the bottom oven, but a pull in her gut told her the
croissants in the top oven were going to burn if she didn’t get to them first.
On autopilot, trusting her witchy powers, she retrieved the croissants and
then her famous cheesecake. Once she had all the timers turned off and
everything cooling, she blew out a breath and leaned against the counter,
pleased everything had turned out perfectly.
A slow clap sounded from the kitchen doorway that led into the lobby
of the inn.
Payton rolled her eyes, and without looking back, she said, “How about
instead of mocking me, you get in here and help me with these dishes?”
“Is there a reason the inn hasn’t hired a dishwasher?” a smoky voice
asked.
“If you’re going to criticize, then maybe it’s time to start volunteering,”
she said, annoyed that some stranger was intruding on her kitchen. She
finally turned around to see who was deliberately getting under her skin and
froze. “Atlas Mazer? What are you doing here?”
“Awe, Payton, is that anyway to welcome your long-lost husband?” The
rock star, dressed in tight jeans and a black long-sleeved Henley, was
leaning against the doorjamb with his arms crossed over his well-defined
chest, acting as if he hadn’t just said something completely insane.
“Unless we got married in a drunken haze in Vegas, then I think you’ve
got the wrong girl,” Payton said, already turning her back to him. Atlas
Mazer was a world-renowned, cocky rock star she’d met eleven months ago
at Priscilla Cain and Leo West’s wedding. He’d made a crazy proposal,
asking her to be his pretend wife for a weekend in exchange for five
hundred thousand dollars. She’d had just enough to drink that she’d
thought, Sure, I could do that, and had agreed.
She hadn’t been surprised when she’d never heard from him again.
Clearly, he’d come to his senses and forgot all about whatever scheme he’d
cooked up.
“No, that didn’t happen. If it had, I’m sure it would’ve been in the
gossip column for weeks. But I did secure a fake marriage certificate to
prove we’re hitched.” He winked, and his lips curved up into a sexy halfsmile.
“What?” she asked, staring at him like he’d lost his mind.
He pushed off the doorjamb and walked right into the kitchen as if he
owned the place. When he stopped next to the counter, he stared into her
eyes and said, “We need it to look official if we plan to fool anyone.”
Payton tried to form words, but the man’s presence was too
overwhelming. She was lost in his smoldering turquoise eyes, and she felt
herself flush as her pulse kicked into overdrive. Her hands twitched to touch
him, and she had to take a step back just to get control of herself. What was
happening? She’d never had such an intense physical response to a man
before. She wanted to both throw herself at him and run from the kitchen.
