Like the heroine
in any good
story,
I was
(I am)
the youngest
of six sisters.
We were maidens of myth
and children of the air.
Our names were forest lullabies:
Mist and Kara,
Rota and Sigrun and Eir.
And I, Hilde.
Hilde, with a fury of red hair.
Hilde, with magic waiting at her fingertips.
There are many stories
about us.
Less than half are true;
less than half are real.
Here is what I know:
we six sisters
were not born, but dreamed by a man
named Odin.
Chapter Two
Odin acquired his magic
through death.
He told my sisters and me
he chose to die
in the hopes of rising
as something new.
Odin hung from an ash tree,
(its boughs
twisted
with age)
his side pierced by a spear,
his right eye open,
his left an empty socket
weeping stardust and blood
in equal amounts.
As Odin died,
he wished,
he writhed,
he dreamed.
And magic flowed
from the ash’s roots, flooding
his bones.
Some believe
Odin became a god in that moment,
that he stepped down from the ash tree
as the father of all
death and enchantment.
But I think he was only our father,
a magician
who wrapped his fingers too tightly
around the world
and squeezed.
When he returned to life,
Odin was changed,
a man whose powers could withstand
the pull of time itself.
And crowded around him
were the dreams he’d had
while dying:
wolves, ravens, and foxes
leaked from the imagination
stored behind Odin’s single eye.
My sisters and I were the only myths
he made who looked
brittle, small, human.
But inside
our girlish limbs and hearts,
we held the same power
our father had learned
at the ash tree:
the ability to bring dreams
to life.
