Devyn
Did Hendrix leave voluntarily? Had he run out with the rest of the
crowd?
“Hey!” Elizabeth shouted. Her voice echoed in the courtyard,
garnering the attention she was looking for. “Is anyone missing? Someone
you came with or that had been close by when the spell took you?”
There were murmurs as people looked around at each other fearfully.
No one answered as they began creeping toward the door again, deciding
Elizabeth’s question wasn’t worthy of an answer.
I rolled my eyes and
debated reminding them it could be them next time, so maybe they should
fucking pay attention. They’d want someone to notice, wouldn’t they?
We continued toward the door as well, though our progress was slower.
The magic around us sizzled and jumped from each of us as if we were live
wires and the magic was playing hopscotch between us. It’s not that we
were trying to be the last ones out of the yard and yet, we hung back as
everyone else hurried away.
“What now?” Crea asked. Glancing her way, I found she was caught
between staring at Loric all demoned out and eyeing the walls suspiciously.
The girl had always been obsessed with demons. Seeing him in his true
form was probably the highlight of her month.
I smirked, despite the situation. Silly girl.
“Hey.” I turned at Loric’s voice to find him on the phone. “Where are
you?” He paused to listen. “Yeah, some shit went down. Shocking, right?”
Not going to lie. I was slightly hypnotized by his eyes. How did red and
blue mix so thoroughly like that? As if the colors complemented each other.
It was unearthly. Ethereal. Haunting and terrifying. So many emotions both
awed and terrified danced through me until Brennan broke my eye contact.
“Don’t look a demon in the eyes,” he said, trying to hide his humor.
“They share some strange similarities with fae in that they can hypnotize
you and make you walk into your own death.”
I thought about Nemix. I’ve looked into his eyes plenty. Although, there
were definitely times when I thought that I’d just lay at his feet and let him
use me how he wanted. Was that my own bedroom submissiveness or was
that his thrall?
“Yeah, we’ll come to you,” Loric said, and I glanced his way, careful
not to look at his eyes this time. He hung up and grinned at me. “Yes, I see
your soul, Devyn. And your desires. Be careful around demons.”
Flushing, I turned away. I could feel them all looking at me and their
humor. Was I really the only one who didn’t know I shouldn’t look a demon
in the eyes? I mean, in what book was that in? Certainly not in any courses
I’ve taken.
“Where are we going?” Crea asked.
“Home. Nero’s home and we should let him know what’s going on,”
Loric said.
