Larkspur House, Suffolk
Libby Mortimer was not the running-away sort, she really wasn’t, but having
been given the chance to escape London with all its cruel reminders of
romantic fairy-tale weddings, she couldn’t get away fast enough. If that made
her a coward, so be it.
The city – and Marcus – was far behind her now and with the window
down, and the warm air whipping at her hair, she willed the old VW
campervan to make the journey to Suffolk. To break down on top of
everything else would be the final straw. But then surely nothing could make
life any worse than it already was?
In one of her typically flippant remarks, Mum had completely dismissed
Marcus’s infidelity and told Libby that she was overreacting, that what he
had done was what a lot of young men did, he’d been sowing his wild oats
one last time before marrying.
‘You know how it is,’ Mum had gone on, as if explaining nothing more
significant than a change in the weather, and quite oblivious to the pain she
was inflicting, ‘boys will be boys, they don’t think about the consequences of
their actions.’
‘If that is meant to make me feel better about finding my fiancé cheating
on me with my best friend three weeks before my wedding day,’ Libby had
replied, ‘you couldn’t be more wrong.’
‘Darling, I’m just trying to make you realise that these things needn’t be
as … as calamitous as you seem to think they are.’
‘Is that really all you can say?’ Libby had asked in disbelief, her hand
gripping the receiver. ‘You’ll be telling me next it’s nothing but a storm in a
teacup, or that I’m making a mountain out of a molehill!’ It was fair to say
that her mother had a heavy hand when it came to clichés and it was nothing
short of a miracle that she hadn’t peppered the exchange with more. So far,
she’d notched up boys will be boys, but doubtless that was just an opening
salvo.
‘There’s an awful lot more I could say,’ she replied, ‘but I can tell by the
unpleasant shrillness of your tone that you’re beyond listening to reason or
taking well-intentioned advice. The only thing I will say is that you should
find it in your heart to forgive Marcus his one error of judgement, and at the
same time wonder what part your so-called best friend played in this. I
wouldn’t put it past that cunning girl to have led him on. I’ve never trusted
her, if I’m honest.’
