A few hours earlier.
‘What on earth is he doing here?’ Lady Iris Clarendon glared at the man
entering the lavish café in the Antiquarians’ Club and clutched her reticule,
her heart pounding wildly.
Cecil burst into his booming laughter.
‘Don’t tell me you’re still mad about that old story, Sister! That was four
years ago!’
‘Mad?’ Iris raised her voice and two gentlemen sitting at a nearby table
turned around, frowning with disapproval. Their reaction only angered her
more. ‘I never want to talk to him again!’
And why should she want to? Mr Eric Campbell was to thank for the
greatest humiliation she had ever had to endure. And that was saying
something, considering that with a brother like hers indignities were never
in short supply.
Cecil poured himself another drink and leaned back in his chair, amused.
He was not new to a little scandal and he must be curious to find out how
far she would go. Campbell noticed them and walked towards them with the
self-assured gait she had learned to know so well.
‘That’s it, Cecil. I am leaving!’
She stood, panicked, but Cecil grabbed her wrist and drew her close. He
smelled of liquor, his eyes were blood-shot.
‘You are not going anywhere.’
‘You know we are not on speaking terms,’ she pleaded, trying to wriggle
free. ‘Why has he followed us here?’
Campbell lived less than half a mile away from their ancestral home in
Oxfordshire, but she had not seen him for four years. It could not be a
coincidence that now, all of a sudden, he appeared in Rome a mere couple
of hours after their arrival.
‘His business often brings him to Rome, Sister. I asked him whether he
could help us out with Papa’s collections of Roman antiques. I want to
make as much money as possible out of the sale of all that old junk.’
‘How can a scoundrel, a criminal of his sort be of any help in selling
Papa’s antiques?’ ‘The last time I checked, he was busy stealing and getting
into fistfights back in Oxfordshire.’
As a matter of fact, Eric Campbell had been busy courting her, too. But
mentioning it would hardly be appropriate.
Cecil burst into laughter.
‘Now, now. Calm down, little sister, people are watching us. We don’t
want to behave scandalously, do we? Half of the ton is in Rome this time of
the year.’
‘Answer-my-question,’ she hissed, lowering her voice. ‘How can a man
of that sort help us selling Papa’s valuables?’
‘You know he has acquired a certain…how should we call it…
experience in trading precious thingsɉ۪
‘I want nothing to do with that sort of experience! I can’t believe you
asked a former smuggler to help us with such a delicate business!’ She
nervously bit her lip. ‘It’s humiliating enough having to sell Papa’s
collections to patch up yet another hole in the estate you squandered.
Thanks God Papa isn’t here to see what is going to happen to his beloved
Roman antiques!’
