Prologue
Sherville, One Year Ago
“I don’t want to marry him, Dad,” Ariana snapped, stabbing her food with
her fork.
She sat glaring across the dinner table at him, her pulse thudding in her
ears. The kitchen was small and dimly lit like the rest of their home. Through
the window, the street outside was somewhat visible. It was snowing, and
few vehicles could be seen sweeping past in the soft light of the streetlamps.
“Eat your salmon, dear,” her mother said without skipping a beat. “I took
my time preparing that. The least you could do is appreciate it enough to take
a bite.”

Ariana ignored her, still staring daggers at her father. Seated at the head of
the table, Cameron Blake looked ready to drop. He always had a worn-out
appearance, which was no surprise considering he was already in his late
fifties, but tonight she noticed more than the wrinkles and worry lines that
had taken permanent residence on his forehead. His shoulders sagged, his
face drained of color, and he had begun to sweat.
“You can’t do this,” she told him.

And it was true. But that was exactly the problem—her father didn’t have
much of a say in the matter, and despite knowing this, Ariana couldn’t help
but feel a twinge of resentment toward him. She was about to be married off,
and all he could do was sit there and look at her with those sad, tired green
eyes.

She wished she hadn’t been home when he returned from work half an
hour ago. Then she wouldn’t have seen the look on his face and known that
something was wrong. She wouldn’t have had to sit and listen as he told her
he’d been accosted by Jared’s men again. And she most certainly wouldn’t
have to taste bile as her mother tried to hide her own worry by acting as
though their lives weren’t careening downhill.

“I never wanted this for you, Ariana,” her father told her. “But the Elf King
has had his eye on you for a month. To deny him would mean…”
Death, she finished silently, and her heart sank to the pit of her stomach.
Nearly everyone in Sherville and the rest of Alaska knew Jared Munson,
the Elf King—and not just other elves. Every supernatural—and a few
humans—within a hundred miles had either witnessed his tyranny or was on
his payroll. Ruling from the shadows, Elf King did whatever he wanted, and
whoever was dumb enough to stand in his way or disobey him usually ended
up with their head on a spike, depending on how testy he was feeling.
And Ariana had been unfortunate enough to catch his attention as she
walked home one evening.
