Helen was closing the retreat for her employers, Mr. and Dr. Levine, their
greyhound rehabilitation consultant, Dr. Levine’s hairstylist, and their best
friend from up the road, Mrs. Shelton III, who had the distinction of being
the mother of the second-richest man in the world. The odd assemblage of
people sat in front of Helen on their brightly coloured meditation cushions,
except for Mrs. Shelton, who sat in a richly upholstered Bergère chair she’d
had her driver bring from home.
“I invite you to take the blessings of your practice deep into your bones
and then out into the world as you gradually reintegrate,” said Helen. Then
she rang the silver bell three times.
The five yogis let out long sighs and relaxed their postures.
“Amen,” said the greyhound expert, who was Southern and couldn’t
stop talking for longer than forty minutes at a time. Her garrulousness
didn’t seem to bother the others. Mr. and Dr. Levine were people of
unusually deep equilibrium, and the others, Helen suspected, were too busy
thinking their own thoughts to notice or care what the dog trainer said.
The retreat took place at the Levines’ home in West Vancouver. The
meditation sessions were held inside the hall built by master craftspeople
from Japan, hired by the Levines at great expense.
The Levines also had khutis constructed for each participant. The living
and sleeping area in each charming little building contained a single bed
and one chair. In the back was a small but exquisitely equipped bathroom
containing a toilet, bidet, custom-designed concrete sink, Japanese bathtub,
and rainforest shower system with all spray types to simulate different sorts
of jungle precipitation. It all had a vaguely Zen whiff about it, although the
style of Buddhism the Levines practised was Theravada in the Burmese
tradition.
All the guests enjoyed their accommodations, except for Mrs. Shelton,
who’d taken one look at the khutis and said no thank you. Her driver and
security guard escorted her home each evening so she could sleep in her
own bed.
“I’ll sleep in the second master bedroom,” she’d told Helen, with zero
self-consciousness. “Like some sort of renunciate.”
Helen, who was the Levines’ butler and a former Buddhist nun, loved
that Mrs. Shelton was not one for pretending to be some sort of ascetic.
Helping her employers with their spiritual journey was just a sideline
for Helen. Her full-time job was taking care of everything else for them.
She made sure their various homes and estates ran smoothly and were fully
and competently staffed. Helen travelled with her employers and handled
all their social engagements and day-to-day needs. She used a combination
of elite-level organization skills, love, and firm boundaries to keep all the
irritations of everyday life at bay for Bunny and Benedict Levine.
