Everything comes so easily to some people. Money, careers, relationships.
And then there’s me.
I glance down and take in my worn slippers, dog hair clinging to their
fuzzy toes. My knee peeks through worn pajama pants that I refuse to let go
of because they remind me of the time I spent living in Aunt Margie’s
country home. Despite the comfort they offer, I can’t help but think about
how ragged I look and how worn down everything in life seems to be.
There’s a whole wide world full of things for me to fumble. Nothing ever
comes easy. Not money, not my career, and definitely not my romantic
relationships. Okay, maybe I shouldn’t say “nothing.” I am a natural at
rescuing animals, hoarding books and eating cheese…
My thoughts spin around my head like a cow-toting tornado as I watch the
family across the street. I went to high school with Fran, the thin Lululemonclad mother pushing her adorable, laughing toddler in the tree swing. Her hair
is in a perfect ponytail and her leggings hug her fit, muscled legs. As I watch,
her equally perfect husband parks in the driveway and walks over to press a
kiss on her cheek.
Nestled in the chair next to my kitchen table, I gaze at them out my bay
window as my foot taps a rhythm on the floor. It’s my favorite spot in my
small, old house. I fold my hands around my freshly brewed pumpkin spice
coffee, allowing my fingers to trace the raised autumn leaf adorning my mug.
It’s a trick my psychologist taught me to stop fretting so much about the
future, to be more present. Focus on points of touch. My legs against the
chair, my fingers on the mug, my foot tapping the floor.
Closing my eyes, I inhale the coffee’s spicy scent and try to calm the
anxious insecurity bubbling inside of me. I imagine the tree outside my
window alight with autumn colors. The occasional leaf breaks free and makes
its slow, meandering glide to the ground. I can see it now: Tucker, my oneeyed dog of a questionable breed, rolling in the leaves, the sound of their
crunching beneath his wiggly bottom. Woodsmoke meanders through the air
as neighbors burn piles of leaves.
I slide my hand over the worn copy of Anne of Green Gables sitting on my
lap, focusing on the feel of its wrinkled cover. I’ve read it a million times, and
Anne’s scrapes never fail to make me smile. I recite my favorite quote from
the book: “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
There. I’ve found it. My happy place.
