SARA ROSE
The trouble began with my two different-colored eyes, one as blue as the
summer sky and the other a velvety brown. Mother was as surprised as
anyone when they changed from that newborn baby blue to the
mismatched eyes of the cursed. Or that’s how she would tell it, anyway.
She’s one prone to drama and sees herself two ways, either as an ingénue or
the victim. Never a nurturing mother.

Isabel, my sister, had the aforementioned sky blue in both eyes, thus
setting her up for a life that pleased my parents and the rest of the world. We
love a beauty, don’t we? Symmetrical faces and full lips and for goodness’
sake, eyes of the same color.

I might have been pretty if not for my eyes. When I gazed at myself in the
mirror and pretended I was normal, I could see that my nose was a nice size
and my cheekbones high. A full mouth that curved upward even when I
wasn’t smiling. But the eyes. There was nothing to do about them. Nothing at
all. Yet I never fully despaired. They gave me the gift of sight, after all. What
a present it was to see the tremendous beauty in my small, sheltered world.
From my window, I saw much more than one would expect.

We lived on one of the best streets in Boston in a townhouse with maids
to fetch anything my heart desired. There were elevated ceilings and marble
floors and large bay windows that looked out to a green park. The scent of
grass and flowers drifted in through my window during warm months and a
faint hint of woodsmoke in the autumn and winter. And the trees. They were
ever changing. As was the sky.

I often sat by a window to read in the evenings, the sounds of the outside
world reminding me that I was alive and not totally alone. Outside this house,
a city was filled with people. Some might have struggles too. I longed to
know some of them, to find a friend. Someone who would not mind about my
eyes.

My sister might have loved me, but as the favorite, she had little
incentive. We were only two years apart and as the eldest, she had set the
stage for perfection. Followed, sadly, by me. So, really, what were any of us
to do? I could never make my mother’s face light up as Isabel had. Or evoke
the growl of approval from Father from behind his newspaper. My success at
my studies brought no admiration from anyone but my governess, Miss Piper.
Father cared not for academic accolades, only beauty.

Who could blame him? My mother was the prettiest of her debutant class.
He’d assumed both his daughters would be beauties. Men like my father, rich
and charming, assumed everything would go exactly as they wished. It was
quite a surprise when it was me who derailed his silver-spooned life.
