Lily
Arctic air frosted the atmosphere, making the February
chill feel relentless. February was not Lily’s favorite month
because not only was it cold, causing heating bills to be at an alltime high but there was also too much romance being advertised
everywhere. Shops were covered with pink hearts, florists were
selling red roses at outrageous prices, and she knew her parents
or some other relative would be sending her a “secret admirer”
Valentine so she wouldn’t feel left out.
But there was one thing she looked forward to. It was a
yearly tradition. Ever since they were thirteen, she and her friend
Yasmin arranged a sleepover at Lily’s – then one at Yasmin’s the
next year, and so on, until their lives merged into adulthood.
Then it became Airbnb weekends or sleeping over at Yasmin’s
since Yasmin’s family happened to be filthy rich and owned a
huge skiing resort chain in the Frost Star Mountain range, just
above the little town of Rosegrave.
The Frost Star range was home to supernaturals, sacred to
those with the power to shift into animals. Various clans dwelt in
the mountains, and a few of them ran tourist destinations to
attract supernaturals from all around the world. In this case and
with the popularity of the supernatural world these days, pretty
much any business — theme parks, bars, and ski resorts —
fronted by supernaturals tended to draw a lot of attention.
Like the one booked for this Valentine’s Day.
One sad thing about this year’s getaway – their friend
Brianna’s would not be coming. Why? She’d recently married
and was expecting. One of theirs, caught in the romance trap at
last.
Which meant they would be a party of five for Valentine’s
Day this year. Lily found herself checking on their recent
booking once more. They’d booked a ski resort high up in the
Frost Star range, run by a clan of lions, one endorsed by
celebrities. Compared to other resorts, their tickets and
accommodations were far more expensive, thanks to the famous
clientele.
It was pricy, but worth it. The lions were not native to the
land, but had settled there hundreds of years ago along with the
many humans who’d emigrated from overseas.
Yasmin’s family had managed to give them a good deal for
their tickets, and she’d taken advantage of this and handed them
out to her friends for this Valentine’s Day.
Run by lions… Lily examined some of the pictures on the
site that showed the lions speeding along with skiers down the
slopes. How must it feel to be out there in the mountains, living
wild and free and admired? One of the lions caught her attention
too, the one with silvery brown fur, a gorgeous, silvery-gray
mane, and the brightest blue eyes she’d ever seen. He was huge,
judging by the size comparison as he stood next to a human,
bigger than any lion had a right to be.
