As Mama used to say, the Divine Mother and the Trickster always had plans
for us we couldn’t foresee.
At the beginning of the summer, I never imagined I would find myself in
exile far from home. Or that I would find myself bonded to a Dragon, a Fae
prince, the Duke of Frankia’s heir, and one of the Sea-People.
Or that I’d be lying in Tama’s loving embrace as I gifted him with my
virginity.
Just as I reached my climax, a curtain of brilliant orange-red fire surged
forth, licking at Tama’s pale skin, reddening and blistering it.
With blinding speed, he pushed himself away from me and leaped off my
bed, leaving me bewildered and empty. His pain and shock radiated through
our soul-bond, instantly quenching my residual pleasure.
“What in the name of Mother Sea was that?” he demanded.
I looked around wildly. Who was attacking us now? Was it the same sinister
assassin who’d burned that mage student to death?
“Why did you burn me?” Tama’s confusion flowed through our bond.
He thought I’d done this?
“I—I didn’t—” Trembling in shock, I stared down at myself with a strange
mixture of awe and fear. Tendrils of smoke curled up from the charred
remnants of my robe. Surrounded by ash, my skin remained completely
untouched by the flames.
I did this? But how is that even possible? Before coming to Darkstone
Island, I’d never been able to summon up the slightest spark of magic, let
alone Fire magic, the rarest and most forbidden kind of magic.
“Tama, I’m so sorry!” I exclaimed, tears stinging my eyes.
What in the name of the Divine Mother is happening to me?
For only Wind-Walkers and Djinn could wield Fire magic and survive.
With that thought came another. Was my Fae friend Gwydion right when he
doubted I was fully human?
All my life, I’d desperately hoped for my powers to awaken at last, only to
have the Provincial Magecraft Aptitude Examiner tell me last autumn that I
possessed not the slightest bit of magic, despite being the daughter of a
powerful Mage-Healer.
And now, my powers had unexpectedly roused at long last… only to injure
the person I loved.
Pushing away my self-pitying thoughts, I focused on Tama’s injuries. The
scents of burned hair and scorched linen filled the air. Guilt and shame
squeezed my chest like the coils of a hungry snake as I saw his long silver
hair looking ragged with the last few inches blackened and curled. Ugly red
patches and blisters marred the pale, luminous skin of his upper body.
Again and again during the three months since we’d arrived at Darkstone
Castle, Tama had put himself in harm’s way for my sake.
“I’m so sorry,” I babbled. “Tama, I’ve caused you nothing but trouble since
we met. Please forgive me!”
