The worst thing about having a hot neighbor was how often I caught myself
looking out the window, hoping for a glimpse of that shirtless god. Too bad
he’s the brother of my friend. And the brother-in-law to two more. I treasure
my friendships more than lusting after a guy.
I ripped my gaze away from my kitchen window and rinsed my coffee
cup for the third time.
No shirtless god.
I wasn’t in the market for a relationship, but I liked to look. And Austen
Knight gave me oodles to look at. Tall, with longish dark hair, a devilish
grin, and a sense of humor that showed me I didn’t laugh enough in life.
He also exuded here for a good time, not a long time energy, which I
needed to stay far away from. Crocus Valley, North Dakota, was a small
town. I didn’t need to give the contractors I worked with more opinions
about what I did and with whom. My parents would have questions like
Wasn’t that how it all started? or You think you’re going to be the one to
nail him down? All of that wasn’t enough to avoid the bachelor next door,
then I had my teen daughter. None of my dating life needed to get back to
Catherine again. Sex wasn’t worth that drama.
“Mom?”
I jumped. The mug fell from my hands and clattered into the bottom of
the sink. Crap. I’d been staring at Austen’s back deck again. I rinsed my cup
for a fourth time.
“Did I scare you?” Catherine giggled. My almost fifteen-year-old still
found the most humorous situations were when I embarrassed myself,
except for when her classmates commented on my dating life.
“Yes. I’m tired.” Tired of ignoring our new neighbor in the house I
coveted. “Are you leaving?”
“Yeah. I need to let Teddy out. Will you be here long enough to let him
in?”
I hadn’t wanted a dog. Being a divorced single mom who ran her own
business while keeping a side hustle kept me busy enough. Then Austen’s
sister, Aggie Barron, got a puppy in at her animal rescue. A purebred
Pembrook Welsh corgi, usually selling for well into the four figures, but not
Teddy. He’d been born with a cloudy eye and a misshapen head. His little
snout curved to the right and his left ear sat back farther than his other side.
He hadn’t been dumped, but Aggie hadn’t been able to say no to his cute
wittle face when the breeder talked to her about finding him a home.
I couldn’t say no, either, and took him in, knowing the possibilities. The
puffball with big ears and a bubble butt could have seizures. He might not
live long. He might need his eye removed. He could be nothing but vet bills
and heartbreak.
Except my other friend, Sutton Knight, Austen’s sister-in-law once she
remarried his brother Wilder later this summer, said she’d help out. After I
saw the way Catherine dropped to her knees and gushed over the corgi, I
took her up on the offer.
Catherine promised she’d take care of him. He was healthy—so far—
but he was still a puppy, and the doggy duties somehow encroached on my
time.
