JAVIER ALATORRE GOT out of his sleek rental car and immediately stepped
into a thick, cold puddle of mud. He scowled up at the drizzling gray sky,
then at his now-ruined shoe.
He could not fathom why anyone would live in this isolated, wild place
when they could have everything at their fingertips in sunny Spain.
But Matilda had wanted this, and after a rather disastrous series of
events, he’d allowed it. As a kindness, as a gift. He had not bothered her
while she’d spent three years holed away in this place, and he wasn’t
particularly keen on doing so now.
But the time for licking her wounds was over. Time was ticking.
He’d known Matilda Willoughby for nearly a decade now. He’d never
been able to think of her as a sister, though Ewan Willoughby had been an
excellent father figure to him in the years he’d been involved with and then
married to Javier’s mother.
Javier had been sixteen when his mother had begun seeing Ewan.
Though his mother wouldn’t agree to marry Ewan for another five years,
Ewan had acted as a father to Javier almost immediately.
In those early years, Ewan had changed Javier from an angry, potentially
violent scrapper into a polished, sophisticated businessman. He’d
encouraged Javier to attend university, he had secured Javier an entry-level
job at WB Industries before he’d graduated, and then he’d set him on the
path to heir apparent. Ewan had polished all of Javier’s rough edges, taught
him the delicate art of control and turned him into the man he was today.
It hadn’t been until his parents’ engagement that he’d met Matilda. A shy
teen who’d preferred hiding behind her father and spending her years at
boarding school rather than concern herself with Javier.
Then the unexpected and unthinkable had happened. Ewan had died
suddenly, with no warning, no chance for Javier to prepare. Javier hadn’t
just lost his father figure. He hadn’t just gotten a promotion and a business
he had to ensure succeeded for the man who’d left it to him.
He’d become the guardian of a sixteen-year-old. One he’d barely known.
He could have counted on one hand the number of times he’d been in the
same room as Matilda at that time.
But he’d taken such a strange responsibility seriously all the same,
endeavoring to keep Matilda’s life as smooth as it had been when her father
was alive. He ensured she finished school, kept her incredibly complicated
and hefty finances in order, and set her up in a nice house with his mother
when she wasn’t at university. All while he took the reins of Ewan’s
company and made it even more impressive.
He would not fail Ewan’s memory, the man who’d changed the course of
his life. He would not allow all the warped ugliness of his childhood to
change that. Which was why control was always the name of the game.
He sighed, studying the little cottage Matilda had been calling home
instead of his mother’s house in Valencia. Part of his control was keeping
adult Matilda out of his orbit, for reasons he didn’t care to dwell on.
