Present Day
The sound of rain beating down on Sam’s loft window tore her from
another restless night’s sleep. Lying there with her eyes still closed, she
listened to the rhythm of the droplets hitting the windowpane. It didn’t take
long before her head filled with thoughts, none of which gave her any
inkling to leave her warm and comfortable bed.
As she continued to listen, she desperately tried to empty her mind of
any negative emotions and land in a place of calm and tranquillity, her
efforts were rudely interrupted by the bane of her life, that god damn alarm
on her phone, a shitty reminder of the day that lay ahead.
Reaching over to the empty side of her double bed, she fumbled for
her phone that lay on the pillow. Still refusing to open her eyes, she jabbed
at the area until the noise stopped. After a few more minutes of
stubbornness, Sam gave into the irritatingly responsible voice that told her
she had to get up.
Sam stretched and rubbed her eyes. The room that she now called
home slowly came into view. It was a small, yet spacious, area. The walls
were off white with no pictures. The floor was covered with cheap carpet,
but it was sufficient for Sam’s needs.
The furniture that inhabited the room was a miss match of vintage and
modern. Her grandmother had passed the dressers down to her before she
died.
There was a small chest of drawers that had seen better days. Two of
the drawer fronts were loose and wouldn’t shut properly. This was the only
item in the room that Sam had picked out herself. The only thing in her
room that made her slightly happy was the bed she was currently refusing to
leave.
Sam had moved back into her mother’s house twelve months ago after
a brutal breakup with Jo, the woman with whom she thought she would
spend the rest of her life.
January 15th would forever be known as one of the worst nights of
her life so far. After finishing an extensive project that had meant long
hours at work and no sleep, she and her small team had finally completed it,
with a couple of days to spare, no less. She remembered feeling the relief
that she wouldn’t have to look at that damn project ever again.
Sam had joined her colleagues at the pub for a well-deserved drink. It
was a ritual; nobody drank until the project was finished and then all hell
would break loose.
Sam knew it would be an enormous blow-out, so she’d called Jo to let
her know she would be home late and to expect her to be a mess.
