Aurelie

Winter was a terrible time for my family.
The farming season was likely to fail, and competing against trained
hunters for food was a fool’s game. So I did what any smart woman would
with the odds against her.
“Fifty gold? Lassy, you best run before I call the guards on you for the
sheer audacity of that bargain.”
“I hear you, Jon,” I said, huffing strands of hair out of my face. “Do you
see any other sour saps in line for your deer?”
Jon was a brute. He had the gut of a drunkard and the eyes of an old,
grumpy man. The bags beneath them were puffy and wrinkled. The patches
of missing hair on his head were visible every time he looked down, adding
to his charm.

When he squinted his eyes, a smirk slithered onto my lips. I had him
where I wanted him. There were plenty of merchants nearby that sold
venison at half the cost. Jon used the limited supply to take advantage of the
ignorant for a meager sum of gold.
The snow stuck to his beard as he curled his lips into a frown, flakes of
ice falling off when he wagged his finger. “Tell you what, Aurelie. You do a
job for me, and you’ll get a month’s worth of venison.”
My proud smirk faded. “What job?” I asked, shifting in place as
uncertainty weighed on my shoulders. “I’m no mercenary, Jon.”
He grinned, his front tooth black from decay. “Something is causing
trouble for hunters in the forest. Scaring the deer off into the fae territory…I
don’t have to explain why that’s an issue.”

Terror settled in my chest. He was right. Anything that went beyond the
mortal realm’s barrier was off-limits.
“How do you expect me to help you with that? You have hunters. They’re
more than able to find the source and eliminate it.”
He made a tsking sound with his tongue and moved to the butcher block.
My eyes flitted behind him, the large slabs of meat that hung from the roof
of his shop capturing my attention. So much food… It could feed my family
for weeks. Cold enough right now, too, to store while they rationed it off.
“I don’t have the gold for that. So it’s you that I’m asking.”
I chewed on the tip of my tongue to stop myself from cursing at him.
Julius hadn’t had a contract in weeks, and Yenira could hardly leave the
compound without risk of imprisonment.

If we didn’t eat, we didn’t work. Without work, we’d never be able to pay
our dues to the catchpole. So, I forced myself to nod once.
“It’s near Goldleaf Lake. Usually plenty of game there, but something has
been spooking them. Get me an answer, and you’ll get two weeks’ worth of
venison. Resolve it for me, and that’s a month… provided you can bring
proof.”

Blinking, I turned away from him and started toward my home. When Jon
whistled, I halted.
“Keep an eye out while you’re there, Aurelie. One of my men hasn’
