Well, that was interesting. At least far more interesting than her usual
existence. It was unlike her to put herself out there like that, making
herself visible. Why would she offer to help the noblewoman? They
had never even been introduced. But everyone, even the lowly companion,
Miss Adriana Adams, knew who Lady Evangeline was.
These thoughts chased each other unhelpfully through Adriana’s mind
as she hurried away from the beautiful lady’s side. Even though it had been
out of character for her to have put herself forward like that, she hadn’t
been able to stand by when the lovely Lady Evangeline had been accosted
by a strange woman. Despite the lady’s fame, though, no one else had
stepped forward to help her.
“You ungrateful wretch!”
The words hadn’t been overloud, but there had been a sort of lull in the
cacophony of the event as sometimes occurred in a crowd, and all heads
had turned in their direction.
It was the whispers, though, that had made her do it.
It had seemed instinctive for Adriana to step up beside Lady Evangeline
and stare down the obviously deluded woman. Adriana’s instincts had rarely
steered her wrong before, but it was most unusual for them to lead her to
making herself so very noticeable.
“Contain yourself, Sabina,” Lady Evangeline had all but hissed while
keeping a pleasant smile upon her tight features.
“Why should I?” the strange woman had countered, still louder than
was warranted, but she had lowered her volume and her belligerence
slightly. Dria complimented herself that it was her own presence that had
caused the adjustment, but it could have just been the other woman’s shame
catching up with her. Sabina, or so Lady Evangeline had called her, kept
darting her gaze between the noblewoman and the unknown standing at her
side. Perhaps she had been counting on Lady Evangeline’s isolation.
Adriana couldn’t regret her impulsive move.
But the moment had passed, and now it was time for her to get on with
her own affairs.
Affairs wasn’t exactly the right word. That sounded far more interesting
than what her life involved. But she needed to return to it, regardless.
Even when it had turned out Sabina was Lady Evangeline’s disgruntled
sister-in-law, Adriana couldn’t regret taking a stand beside the noblewoman,
protecting her from the whispers that would have circulated through the
ballroom over a salacious scene.
But she wasn’t about to prolong the
moment. She hurried back to the safety of the sidelines as soon as Lady
Evangeline’s friends arrived to flutter around her. The woman had barely
acknowledged Dria’s presence before she was gone. But that was totally
fine by Adriana.
The life of a paid companion, it could be argued, not that she ever
would argue, quite required invisibility and anonymity, at least in her
experience thus far. Despite not even reaching the first quarter century of
her existence,
