~Billie~
Beneath the late-summer Texas sky, smoke drifted up from the barbecue
in my parents’ Houston backyard. My four-year-old nephew, Charlie,
squealed as he raced around the yard, pursued by one of his uncles with a
water gun, while his younger sister, Jenny, sat at a picnic table, colouring
quietly. Their cousin, Randy, had just gone to sleep in his mother’s arms
where my sisters sat chatting to each other. My dad and his other son-in-law
stood at the barbecue, arguing over whether the meat was done yet while I
helped my mom bring out some more beers and a jug of fresh lemonade
from the kitchen.
The scene would have been idyllic if it weren’t for two people missing:
one who couldn’t be there, and one who had chosen not to be.
“Have you heard from Dex?” I asked my mom quietly, not wanting my
sisters to overhear. They seemed to be in a good mood, and I didn’t want to
bring them down.
Her lips tightened as she shook her head. “Only to say he didn’t feel up to
coming. Again.”
We all wanted to be sympathetic and supportive, but the truth was, we
were getting worried. It had been two years since my brother lost his wife to
cancer, and rather than getting better, he seemed to be withdrawing more
than ever. Grief didn’t have a timeline, we understood that, but the situation
left us all feeling helpless. My sisters and I had all promised Dex’s wife that
we’d encourage him to move on and keep living his life, but lately, he
hadn’t given us much of a chance to.
It must be hard for him to see life going on as our family continued to
grow. My sister, Tonia, and her husband, Cam, had two kids, while Laura
and her husband, Jesse, had just had their first. As the youngest, I knew
how it felt to always be a step behind everyone, but unlike Dex, I’d never
lost anyone special to me. I just hadn’t found the right guy yet, the one who
made me feel the way my sisters did with their significant others. I dated;
some might even say I had dated a lot back in college. My sisters often
called my taste in men into question, but I didn’t think there was anything
wrong with them. I was simply waiting for the lightning strike that came
with finding ‘the one’.
“Billie, come and sit down,” Laura called out to me as the argument at
the grill got settled and Cam proudly carried over a plate of steaks that were
far too well-done, as usual. “You’ve got to fill us in about your new class.”
“There’s not much to tell,” I answered honestly, grabbing a beer and
settling down next to Laura and Tonia. “
