“Just one more stop, I swear!” Mezli shouts at me with unflagging
enthusiasm, leading us to our next destination.
My feet ache and I wobble in my absurdly tall heels as a pair of
her long, dark pink arms tug me past the line at the club entrance.
This is the fifth nightclub we’ve been to in our whirlwind tour of
nightlife on Spire—the largest space station in the quadrant. They’re all
blending together in a haze of garish neon bodies pressed together on dance
floors, and outlandish, overpriced drinks.
A sign that translates to “Epiphany” hangs above the entrance, cycling
rapidly through the colors of the rainbow. It illuminates alien faces as we
pass, some eyeing us with frustration as we cut in line, and others gawking
at us.
Well, probably just me—the purple-haired human in a too-tight,
blindingly fluorescent outfit Mezli insisted I wear. When I showed up at my
friend’s apartment in a cute black dress, a pair of sensible boots, and my
hair pulled back in a neat bun, she scowled at me and proclaimed there was
no way I’d go out with her dressed like that for my introduction to Spire.
After an hour spent quick-dyeing my chocolate brown hair to a vivid
purple and raiding her closet to find something suitable, my excitable and
vastly more fashionable friend found my appearance satisfactory. I’m not as
convinced. Mezli is nowhere near as curvy as me, nevermind that she’s a
nexxit and has two sets of arms. The sides of my breasts peek out of the
extra holes in the ridiculous hot pink crop top and the matching shorts keep
riding up into my crotch.
As we head to the front of the line, I tug my translucent coat closed, as
if that will somehow hide me from the curious stares of the aliens
surrounding me. A wide, muscle-bound bouncer with reptilian green skin—
a vuloi, my mental catalog of alien races reminds me—nods at Mezli as she
pulls us past. She runs a free hand playfully across his beefy arm and he
winks with his left column of stacked eyes in return.
The flamboyant, bubbly nexxit yanking me along is my only friend on
Spire. We’ve only recently met in person, but she’s the reason I’m here and
my sole lifeline on this space station. So I can at least try to pretend to be
fun for one night. I just didn’t realize when she said we were going out for
the night, she meant all night.
