I never trusted silence. Baxint was a noisy city with too many people
crammed within its walls. Someone was always shouting. Cars were always
backfiring.
So when I reached the top of the stairs on the way to my apartment, and
my ears rang with nothing, my heart skipped a beat. Alarm bells clanged in
my head. For a moment, I pushed aside thoughts of my nursing job I just
left where I’d had to cauterize a wound on the thigh of a mid-50s man who
was too drunk to know he was bleeding out.
Fatigue weighed on me like a wet blanket. My hands shook from the
need to eat. But survival instinct kicked in. I peered down the dimly lit
hallway with its stained carpet to see that my apartment door had been

I felt like I was losing my mind.
There was no use reporting it to the police. They were short staffed as it
and triaged more pressing matters like murders. I only had a hunch I was
being followed. They would have rolled their eyes at me and escorted me
out of the station.
I held my breath as I turned. Was the intruder still inside? Were they
waiting somewhere in the shadows of my apartment building?
I descended the stairs with silent footsteps thanks to my rubber nurse
shoes. My crisp scrubs rubbed together at my thighs.
Swish. Swish. Swish.
My breath came faster, so loud in my ears that I swore every resident
could hear it. Where was everyone? I hit the last stair and as soon as my
foot hit concrete, I burst out onto the dark night street on a dead run.
The hospital was close by, and I sped toward it as fast as I could. I’d
been running and lifting weights lately just for this purpose,
