The furnace rattles and the walls creak as if the building itself has just
taken a shuddering breath. I think the rain has let up outside, meaning I
should probably head back to the dorms. But the D Major scale stares
menacingly at me from the music stand in the corner, far too much black
ink on that white sheet of paper. I feel as if leaving now would only be
admitting defeat. They don’t call it the most difficult violin scale for
nothing, but it is only a scale. I should be able to do it. I got into Bayer
University’s music department after all, one of the most prestigious
classical music programs on the west coast.
I should be able to play this goddamn scale.
But it’s late. The music building has been empty since at least an hour
ago when I heard a fellow student pack up his cello and fumble down the
rickety stairs of this hundred-year-old building that really needs to be
renovated. For being the “best in the west,” Bayer’s music department
could sure use some tune ups (pun intended).
I tap my stubby nails—clipped as short as they can be so I can better
push the strings—against the violin in my lap, contemplating. I squint out
the dark window, unsure if the lack of pitter-pattering against the
windowpanes means the rain has truly gone or if it’s just transformed into a
light drizzle. It’s Seattle after all; the locals consider light drizzle
synonymous with nice weather. Being from the other side of the state, I’m
not quite used to it yet.
Regardless of the state of the rain, I probably should leave. I’ve got an
early class in the morning, which I’ve already skipped an embarrassing
amount of times considering we’re only about two months into the
schoolyear. And I’m a freshman. But it’s Music Theory 101, and while I
understand its importance, I also have to ask why anyone would go into
college majoring in music without knowing the basics of music theory. So
far, I’ve learned nothing new, and I’d rather be sleeping than learning about
the Circle of Fifths that I’ve had memorized since seventh grade.
But I should probably be a good student and attend. It’s what I’m here
for, after all. I stand to put my violin back in its case. Standing at the
window, where my case is open, propped up on a table, I can see out into
the foggy night below. No one is out at this hour. All are probably back at
their dorms asleep, like I should be. I catch movement out of the corner of
my eye, but when I glance down at the dimly lit sidewalk, I see nothing.
Probably a raccoon. Or a cat.
