MERCY
Sold. The word echoes through the sudden silence of the theater.
My heart is pounding so hard I’m having trouble catching my
breath.
Oh my God. A stranger just bought me for fifty million dollars!
I wipe my sweating palms down the sides of the barely-there dress and
my knees go loose as I’m roughly pulled off the stage and down a dark
flight of stairs by the leash around my neck. The collar tightens painfully
when I miss the last step, twisting my ankle. The woman on the other end is
completely uncaring that I’m hurt or unsteady—or that I’m moments away
from a panic attack.

She pulls me through a doorway and into a small room bathed solely in
a soft red glow where she stops abruptly and spins around to face me. Her
thick auburn hair fanning out to fall in waves around her slender shoulders.
Dressed in evening attire, her gown is little more than a scarlet silk body
glove with slits up to her hips on both sides and mile high stilettos. She
would be model beautiful, except for the way her face is twisted and ugly
with absolute rage.

“Kneel.” She grits through her clenched teeth.
Before I can process her order, the back of her hand cracks across my
cheek so hard I see stars.
“I said kneel.”
My hands clutch at the side of my face and my eyes well with tears as I
drop to my knees before her. It’s hardly the first time someone hit me, but
usually I have some warning.

I don’t understand any of what’s happening or why she’s so angry and
taking it out on me. I’m the one who was just sold to a monster!
Oh, God. Because when I looked out into that audience, what I saw
was…terrifying. The shadowy figures didn’t look like men. They didn’t
look human.

“The Goddess knows what Jarik sees in the likes of you,” the red-haired
woman snarls at me before clipping the end of my chain to a ring set onto
the floor. When she stands up, she smiles down at me. A menacing smile
that sends shocks of fear racing through my chest. “It’s a full moon tonight.
I hope you like things rough.”

With that, she turns on her heel and strides out of the room, slamming
the door behind her. Leaving me all alone. Chained to the floor.
What does it being a full moon have to do with anything? But then I
remember what I saw in that audience. Eyes glinting unnaturally in the
darkness. Lips spread in wide smiles, showing off rows of sharp teeth. One
of them had skin the color of blood and sweeping black horns curling back
from his forehead. Another was chalky white with black holes where his
eyes should have been and long black hair framing a too thin face.
