CLUB APHRODITE
MONDAY, JUNE 9, 1975 COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
The killer was not an emotional sort, yet he felt a twinge of nostalgia as he
walked past the entrance to Tivoli Gardens on his way to the brothel and a
meeting with his favorite forger. He had been to the amusement park as a
boy visiting from Germany, though he could not remember which foster
parent, court-appointed guardian, or child molester had brought him.
He was only nine or ten at that time, and his recollections from that
visit, as well as those from most of his childhood, were willfully buried and
walled off. The memories stirred on this day were of a much different visit
to Copenhagen’s landmark tourist attraction. His fondest remembrances,
twisted as they might be, were from his activities within the park only five
years ago.
This was in the summer of 1970, when he was still a member of the
federal police special forces stationed near Bonn. Bored out of his mind
with the constant training exercises and lack of real action, he had come to
Copenhagen for the kind of thrill not offered within Tivoli Gardens.
Sexmesse was a weeklong sex fair, a trade show for Denmark’s flourishing
pornography industry with more than fifty thousand smut vendors, perverts,
and voyeurs from all over the world.
I normally prefer gun-show porn, but this is a very close second, he
thought upon entering the high school gymnasium hosting the event. There,
he joined the lustful stream of gapers, which was 99 percent male, mostly
middle-aged, and desperately unattractive.
So many wankers! There is no way in hell I would visit the restrooms
here. I’ll piss myself first, he thought.
Topless go-go dancers were stationed at most of the booths. They
hawked vibrators, whips, riding crops, leather corsets, masks, and stilettoheeled shoes, many of them in men’s sizes. A large, obese, bald man
pitched male potency pills at a booth made to resemble an erect penis.
Why would a man hoping for a stiffer cock buy something from an ugly
man who so closely resembles a pecker himself?
The killer lingered only at a booth featuring several tables of S&M
books, magazines, photographs, and posters. He was drawn to the most
violent images, which matched those that played out in his thoughts,
dreams, and memories, beginning in childhood.
His mind had wandered back to the locked closet where his mother kept
him during her meetings with clients, but those memories were interrupted
when a husky voice called out, “Hey, you, the handsome one, come talk to
me. Maybe we can do business.”
