Elwyna
We were at a supper, I was exhausted. Each day at the Norsemen’s
village had been a new and wonderful experience for me. I had
done and seen more in a fortnight than I had in the whole of my life. I took
a seat near my father and noticed his hands were curled into fists. I was
surprised he had lasted so long surrounded by the Norsemen. I knew our
time here was growing shorter, but I wasn’t ready to leave; I was having
way too much fun.

The food on the table consisted of braised boar, mutton stew, loaves of
bread, different kinds of cheese, and baked tarts. Everything smelled so
delicious, and my stomach growled loudly. I piled some of everything onto
my plate and began to eat. Soon the pang of hunger lessened, and I felt
content. Popping the last bit of a tart into my mouth, I leaned back. I caught
movement in the corner of my eye and glanced over. Revna was waving,
beckoning me to join her and Siv.
I sat up and turned to my father, a fissure of fear sliding through my belly.
“May I go?”

“Go,” he said through clenched teeth, his knuckles turning white as his
fists tightened more. He was ready to lash out at me. I knew I would get the
brunt of his anger when we left, but I was determined to enjoy my time here.
After all, in a few years, it would hopefully be my home.
I stood before he had a chance to change his mind and left to join my
friends. The sun had set and the night was pitch black. The three of us
decided to sneak around the town and spy on people around the longhouse.
The concept was so exhilarating to me. Good Christian girls didn’t sneak or
have fun in any way. The music was loud as the ale and mead got passed
around. More was consumed and ingested. It was total excess, total
gluttony. Everything that I had learned to be wrong was being done here,
except for one thing that no one had ever explained to me.

Siv pulled Revna and I behind a table when we stumbled upon something
that had a bolt of shock striking through me. I had never seen anything like
it. A young man looked to be embracing a woman, their lips pressed
together, kissing in a way I hadn’t known possible. They were passionate
while her skirts were pulled up, and bunched at her hips. The man’s hand
moved over the skin of her thighs as he pulled away from her mouth.
