Backstage was aflutter with security guards, assistants, and the event
managers. Ariel was fairly certain there were heads of state with smaller
protection details. If she could pinpoint something she wasn’t going to miss
during her yearlong sabbatical from performing, it was the post-show frenzy.
That and the fluorescent-lit beige halls that made every area marked
AUTHORIZED PERSO NNEL ONLY something out of a horror movie.
Chrissy Mahilal, a peppy Guyanese woman who barely cleared five foot
one, bodychecked her way through the baker’s dozen flanking Ariel and
doubled her pace to keep up. Chrissy offered her boss a recycled plastic
tumbler full of pomegranate-flavored electrolyte water, from which Ariel
took thirsty sips.

“Reviews from the fans are coming in,” Chrissy said, an exuberant trill
embellishing the personal assistant’s vowels. “You’re trending worldwide,
and the official Siren Seven gem appliqués have just been backordered. We
have an invite from the owner of Ma Chérie. He’s giving Siren Seven the
club’s premier VIP lounge.”

Ariel chuckled. “The twins will love that.”
Chrissy continued, scrolling with her index finger. “Trevor Tachi is back
in your DMs…”
Ariel glanced at Chrissy. Turquoise gems glinted at the corners of her
eyes, and strands of her henna-dyed hair were coming undone from her
chignon. If she smiled any harder, Ariel might be able to count all her teeth.

That was a bad sign.
“You know Trevor ruined his chance with me when he lied to
Entertainment Daily! about what happened backstage at Wonderland Fest.
What aren’t you saying?”
“Why do you think there’s something I’m not saying?”
They came to a stop outside Sophia’s dressing room, where the other
assistants handled the post-show chaos.

Ariel arched a shrewd brow. “I’ve known you for ten years. You panicsmile and straighten up like you’re back in ballerina boot camp.”
Chrissy grumbled and squeezed the air. “Damn you, Mistress
Doroshinskaya.”
“What is it?” Ariel asked patiently, though her insides bubbled with
anxiety. Last show, Thea had tripped during the chorus of “Heartbreak
Island” and became a meme. Before that, Stella had been photographed
kissing a Hollywood starlet at an after-party, which had drawn their father’s
fury because she’d broken curfew and their “no unsanctioned relationships”
rule. Before that, seven zealous fans had made their way backstage, dressed
from head to toe as the del Mar sisters, and snuck past security. They’d been
waiting in the greenroom and were caught smelling the band’s dirty clothes.
“I have already conjured several disaster scenarios in the last thirty
seconds, Christina Mahilal. Spill.”

Chrissy handed her phone to Ariel. “There was a leak I think you should
see.”
The anxiety in her gut transformed into those ugly little Troll dolls Sophia
collected. They whispered her worst fears back to her, shouting, “They hate
you. You’re fake. You talentless hack. Thank the music gods you’re over.”
Ariel took a deep breath and scanned the article Voltage Sound had posted
while she’d still been onstage. It read: ARIEL DEL MAR: POP PRINCESS SLATED TO
GO SOLO.
