Bear McGowen flipped his blinker on and exited off Interstate 12 into
Baton Rouge. He’d driven from New Orleans, where he’d rented a
car after flying into Louis Armstrong. He needed the drive, using the time to
let his life as a business owner slip away as he assumed the mantle of a
Guardian operative.
The phone call he’d received yesterday was strange, and Bear wasn’t sure
what he was getting into. The thought that Christopher Whitehead was
missing didn’t compute, and there were too many holes in his sister’s story to
provide adequate background to do much of anything, so he decided to travel
to Baton Rouge to determine what was happening.
Topher, as he called him, was a friend, albeit one he hadn’t talked with
much lately. A text here and there after the mission in Cuba had kept them in
touch. A nuclear physicist, Topher was one of those people Bear liked
straight off the bat. He’d known the instant he saw Topher in Cuba that the
man was his mission. Topher was so far out of his element. And indeed, Bear
had made sure Whitehead got out of Cuba alive. Thankfully, they all had.
Sage Browning, who was now Bear’s boss, had been shot but recovered. That
mission was a mess of crossed wires and a political quagmire. Thank God
Guardian had high cover for all the operatives who infiltrated Cuba to find
the dirty bombs, which was why Topher was even on that mission.
As the GPS directed him to Topher’s apartment, Bear went over his
conversation with Piper Whitehead.
“WHAT?”
“Ah …” a soft female voice stammered on the other side of the line. “I’m
looking for Mr. McGowen.”
“I don’t want to buy anything,” Bear snapped. It was the fifth or sixth
time this number had called him without leaving a message. He was over the
game. Rude wasn’t his style, but neither was being a pest, which was what
he’d labeled the caller. Capital P.
“I’m not selling anything. I’m calling because I think something
happened to my brother.”
Bear’s opinion of the caller shifted, and so did his curiosity. “Who’s your
brother?”
“Christopher Whitehead. He said if something happened to call you.”
The words were rushed, and the woman sounded desperate.
Bear’s body tightened; his attention focused on the caller at the other end
of the line. He leaned forward. “You have my complete attention.” Because
he knew for a fact that Topher didn’t have a family anymore. His mom had
passed, and his father had ghosted when Topher was a kid.
“I was gone for three months. I went on a sabbatical, and when I got
back, he was gone.”
Bear got up, walked to his office door, and closed it. The sounds of the
gym, which were usually a comfort, weren’t welcome in the conversation.
“You’ll excuse me if I have trouble with your call. Topher doesn’t have any
family.”
