GABI
’m sorry, Ms. Emerson.” The gate attendant assumed a fake
apologetic smile. “The flight has been canceled due to technical
issues.”
They had been having those issues for the past two hours, and every time
Gabi had approached the desk, the attendant’s answer had been that the
problem was being worked on and that boarding should start shortly.
She had been afraid to stray away from the gate to use the bathroom or
grab a cup of coffee, but when she’d finally dared a dash to the nearest coffee
shop, the announcement about her flight had finally come—not that boarding
was starting but that the flight had been canceled and the passengers should
head to the customer service desk to make other arrangements.
It had been such a bad idea to book a flight straight from the conference
to Los Angeles. She should have gone home, rested for a few days, and then
hazarded another flight.
Except, Gabi knew that she wouldn’t have done that. She would have
chickened out.
“I just heard the announcement about my flight being canceled, and that’s
why I’m here. Can you please check if a seat is available on another flight to
Los Angeles today?”
The woman affected another one of her fake smiles, but this one also had
a condescending slant to it. “We don’t handle flight bookings at the gate. You
should go to the customer service desk.”
There was a separate desk for that?
Gabi stifled a biting retort that would have felt awesome passing her lips
but would have probably resulted in airport security escorting her away.
Her temper and her big mouth had gotten her in trouble before.
Still, she couldn’t just let it go. “You could have told us that the flight
might be canceled two hours ago, when you first announced that there would
be a delay. Now, I’m probably not going to find a seat on another flight
leaving today.”
“My apologies, but I can only convey the information I receive, and until
fifteen minutes ago, I was told that they were working on the problem. The
customer service desk can help you book another flight, and if none work for
you today, they will provide vouchers for hotel accommodations and meals.”
Realizing that she wouldn’t get any help from the woman, Gabi forced
down a cuss word and took a long breath instead. “Can you point me toward
the customer service desk?”
The gate attendant looked relieved at the prospect of finally being rid of
her. “It’s located in Terminal D, next to gate 98. Good luck, Ms. Emerson.
And I apologize again for the inconvenience.”
Practiced, empty words.
“Thanks,” Gabi murmured as she grabbed the carry-on handle and rolled
it in the direction the attendant had indicated.
