ELARA
“STAY DOWN, or I’ll break your arm,” Quin growled at me.
Already on my hands and knees, I didn’t know when to give up. Quin
had challenged me, which pissed me off on its own, but then he’d made the
match magic-free because he knew I sucked at hand to hand combat.
Slowly, I got to my feet and stood. I spat out sand, and glared at him.
“You hit like a pixie.” Taunting him wasn’t smart, but my mouth had a mind
of its own most days.
He snarled, revealing slightly pointed canines.
Raising my fists to defend myself, I prepared for his attack.
He lunged and ran into a mass of muscled perfection with the name
Kydrus.
Quin leapt backwards, eyes wide.
Kydrus hadn’t even looked at Quin. His eyes were focused on me. “This
fight is over. Elara, come with me.”
Quin left in a hurry, probably trying to avoid Kydrus’s wrath. Had I not
been caught in his line of sight, I would have run away, too.
Kydrus spun on his heel and marched down the sidewalk towards his
house.
With a sigh, I followed, hanging my head in shame.
Kydrus was one of the Four Warlords. Each warlord presided over a
section of Minloa. Usually, with an iron fist. The warlords were the
strongest Seelie fae in existence. They ensured the peace was kept, and kept
the chaos many fae creatures craved at bay. They gained their titles after the
Great War. Our world had been almost decimated, but the four stepped
forward and brokered a treaty of peace. That was over one thousand years
ago, which was the blink of an eye to the immortals.
Kydrus wore a simple pair of pants and a t-shirt. He had his sword
strapped to his side, which ruined his otherwise normal-looking outfit. His
dark hair flowed to the middle of his back, the top pulled back just to keep
it from falling in his eyes.
His house was in the center of Linta, the main city of the Silpo sector.
The three-story, wood and stone house looked as imposing as its owner.
He opened the door and motioned me inside.
Hesitation had me standing at the doorway, my hands gripping the hem
of my shirt.
Immortals were patient, and Kydrus had the patience of a saint. He held
still, allowing me to work through my issues and ask my question.
“Do you mean to cause me physical harm?” I asked softly.
“No,” he answered, his voice as soft as mine had been.
Full-blooded fae could not lie. They could bend the truth and word
things in a way that wasn’t technically a lie, but his one-word answer gave
no room for trickery. So, I entered his house. I had been there several times
